Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, who hit leadoff home runs and drove in more than 100 RBIs last season, has been a steady presence in the lineup. But as pitchers increase their fastball velocity and breaking balls become more common, Schwarber realizes he must adapt.
Kyle Schwarber’s Response to Potential Lineup Change
Schwarber made his mark in the record books in 2024, hitting a stunning 14 leadoff home runs, showing he could set the tone for games. Though many of his home runs were solo shots, he still finished with an impressive 104 RBIs, proving he can drive in runs from the top of the lineup.
After signing Trea Turner, a veteran leadoff hitter with a .302 average, manager Rob Thomson sees Turner stepping into the leadoff spot while Schwarber takes on a role that emphasizes run production.
Schwarber has also made it clear he’s committed to the team’s success, saying it doesn’t matter where he is in the lineup — he’s going to leave it all on the field. Whether he’s batting leadoff, cleanup, or anywhere in between, Schwarber’s focus remains on helping the team win.
Schwarber understands how pitching is continually evolving. With pitchers throwing at higher speeds and adding sweeper sliders to their arsenals, he knew he’d have to change his approach.
Schwarber’s been working on “quieting” his bat — not moving it as much before he swings — to improve his timing and contact. This adjustment involves starting with the bat away from his chest, allowing for a more direct and effective swing.
Schwarber said, “Pitching has kind of evolved and you have to be able to keep evolving with it.”

This isn’t the first time Schwarber has made mechanical tweaks, having made several adjustments since breaking into the MLB.
One example came in 2017 when he went to Triple-A and adopted a more upright stance with fewer hand movements to establish a steadier base and generate more power.
Philadelphia Phillies Can Rely on Schwarber’s Experience
Schwarber’s willingness to adapt, whether it’s his batting stance or his spot in the lineup, shows how much he wants to help the Phillies win. His versatility gives Thomson flexibility in putting together a strong lineup. Whether he’s at the top of the order or driving in runs from the middle, Schwarber’s impact remains crucial.
In a sport where small adjustments can make a big difference, his forward-thinking approach puts him and the Phillies in a position for continued success.
