One of the biggest stories heading into the 2025 MLB season is the contract situation surrounding Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Guerrero is entering the final year of his deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, and it will be interesting to see how things unfold.
With Guerrero in the last year of his contract, there’s a real chance he won’t be with Toronto after 2025. So, if the Blue Jays fall out of the playoff race before the MLB trade deadline, they could consider trading him to another team. However, at just 25 years old, the hope is that a contract extension can be worked out sooner rather than later.
Former General Manager David Samson Calls Out Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
On the March 12 edition of his “Nothing Personal” podcast, former MLB general manager David Samson discussed Guerrero’s contract situation.
Samson said, “He made a simple math mistake or his agent wasn’t paying attention. Because the way the math works in economics is that if you got a dollar today, that means you’ve got a dollar in present value.
“If you have a salary of two dollars, one dollar per year, the present value is one dollar, for which you’re getting now, and then you discount the next dollar for the next year. And let’s pretend that’s 90 cents, which means you’re at a dollar and 90. So for Guerrero to say that he wants 500 of present value, he is in emnistone land. Total La La.”
One reason Guerrero may be asking for a massive deal is the Juan Soto contract situation this past offseason. Soto signed a 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets, resetting the market for years to come.
Last season with the Blue Jays, Guerrero played in 159 games, hitting .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs. He also had two stolen bases and was caught stealing twice. His on-base percentage was .396.
Being in a contract year could become a distraction from Guerrero’s performance on the field. After all, some believe Mets first baseman Pete Alonso struggled last season because he was in a contract year with New York.
If Toronto is in the playoff mix this season, there’s a good chance Guerrero stays with the team past the trade deadline. If not, his future with the Blue Jays — or another team — remains up in the air.
