Davey Martinez Makes Feelings Clear Surrounding CJ Abrams After Surprise End to 2024 MLB Season

Davey Martinez has been the manager of the Washington Nationals since the 2018 MLB season. Martinez led the Nationals to a World Series title during the 2019 season.

Last season did not go as planned, and they finished with a 71-91 record. If they are to turn the corner, shortstop CJ Abrams will need to perform well during the 2025 season.

Washington Nationals Manager Davey Martinez Is Moving Forward With CJ Abrams in 2025

Abrams was solid during his 2024 season with the Nationals. He appeared in 138 games and had a .246 batting average with 20 home runs and 65 RBIs, along with 31 stolen bases and 12 caught stealing attempts. His on-base percentage was .314.

Last season, he was demoted to Triple-A to join the Rochester Red Wings, a move that came right before the Triple-A and MLB seasons ended. This move shocked many Washington fans, despite Abrams being an All-Star during the 2024 MLB season.

He was optioned to the minor leagues because of an “internal matter” and not because of his play. They demoted him to the minors last season because Abrams was out until 8 a.m. at a casino. Washington had a game against the Chicago Cubs at 1 p.m. the same day.

During the Chicago game, he went 0-for-3 with a walk. Martinez is now looking to move past that and have Abrams help Washington become a better team during the 2025 MLB season.

The Nationals manager said via Foul Territory, “We’re beyond that. I talked to him over the winter. I don’t have any hard feelings about the whole deal. I love the kid, I really do. For the most part, he’s engaged, he’s here, he knows what he needs to do.

“His routine’s impeccable. That’s beyond us. I hope he learned from what happened, and we’ve moved on, and we’re looking forward to him doing big things.”

Abrams looks to be even better during the 2025 season with Washington. He is part of a young nucleus on the Nationals, including James Wood and Dylan Crews. If Washington is going to take the next step in the National League East during the 2025 season, Abrams can not repeat the same mistake he made last season.

At just 24 years old, he could be even better this season with Washington. If he performs well, they may sign him to a long-term deal.
