When Aaron Judge is pumped about a new teammate, you can bet they’re something special. The Yankees’ captain wholeheartedly supports the addition of two-time All-Star Cody Bellinger, considering his impressive body of work in multiple seasons beginning with a 39-homer, 97-RBI rookie 2017 campaign.
With Bellinger taking over center field and Judge returning to right field, the Yankees have definitely strengthened both their batting order and outfield defense. Could this be the key to getting them back to the World Series for the second consecutive season?
Cody Bellinger’s 2019 Season Proves Why He Is a Two-Time All-Star
The Yankees’ decision to trade for Cody Bellinger this offseason has been really well-received, particularly by Judge. Not only is the two-time AL MVP excited about Bellinger’s impressive resume, but about how he can help the Yankees both offensively and defensively.
Bellinger’s considerable upside is exemplified by a memorable 2019 season with the Dodgers in which he won took home NL MVP, Silver Slugger, and Gold Glove honors, while also securing his second All-Star nod.
The slugging outfielder was locked in from the start of that campaign, leading all of MLB in runs, hits, batting average, and slugging percentage in April. His 13th home run, which he belted on April 27, set the new Dodgers record for the most round trippers in the month of April.
By the All-Star break, Bellinger led the National League with 72 runs and 73 RBIs. He also boasted an elite .334/.431/.687 slash line.
Yankees’ Lineup Sees Major Upgrade
Bellinger’s lefty power brings a new vibe to the Yankees’ lineup. His ability to work the count and get on base aligns perfectly with the team’s offensive strategy. Judge is pumped about how everything is falling into place, but he’s still figuring out how the batting order will look.
He’s also mentioned that the lineup is now loaded with players who tend to have great at-bats, can get on base, steal bases, and hit for power.
Judge Looking Forward to Return to Right
Since Bellinger is set to take over center field, Judge will move back to his preferred right field spot. This stands to improve the team’s defense, boosting the range in the outfield. Judge is all in for this switch, noting, “I’m excited to go back to right, it’s gonna be fun over there.”
Besides the tactical changes, Judge’s leadership should also be integral in getting Bellinger and other newcomers to quickly mesh with the Yankees’ culture.
