Mitch Trubisky Fantasy Waiver Wire: Should I Pick Up the Steelers QB This Week?

Should fantasy football managers pick up Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky on the waiver wire in Week 5?

It has been an up-and-down year for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it was down on Sunday as the team lost to the Houston Texans, 30-6.

As bad as the play was, there are bigger concerns for the Steelers as quarterback Kenny Pickett left the game due to a knee injury. His status is currently unknown, and coach Mike Tomlin said the team will learn more in the next few days.

With Pickett battling that injury, is it time for fantasy football managers to potentially add his backup?

Should Mitch Trubisky Be a Fantasy Waiver Wire Add in Week 5?

The Steelers offense has been extremely inconsistent, and it was ugly on Sunday in the loss to the Texans. Pittsburgh could only muster 225 total yards of offense, struggling in both the pass and run games.

Pickett only threw for 114 yards, and Mitch Trubisky didn’t provide the offense any kind of spark, going 3 of 5 for 18 yards. As bad as the passing game was, the rushing attack wasn’t much better. Pittsburgh ran the ball 25 times for 114 yards.

While those numbers aren’t bad, the team continues to lack explosiveness when it comes to running the ball. This allows defenses not to have to put an extra man in the box, enabling them to match up on the outside in the passing game more effectively.

If you are thinking about Trubisky, keep in mind it wasn’t only Pickett who got injured in the game. Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth also left the game in the third quarter with a hamstring injury.

Knowing all of this, is there any potential in having Trubisky on your fantasy roster? Absolutely not.

There are too many issues with the Steelers right now to think Trubisky can bring anything to your fantasy team. They aren’t able to establish any kind of run game, and their receivers haven’t found consistency. The team is still missing Diontae Johnson on the injured reserve, and George Pickens just hasn’t been steady enough yet.

In the end, the upside is just not there to spend any money on Trubisky. There is still a chance that Pickett won’t miss any playing time. If he does, the schedule does not do the Steelers any favors over the next few weeks.

Next week, the Steelers play the Ravens at home before a bye week and will then travel to face the Los Angeles Rams. There is just no real reason to even consider Trubisky. The Steelers offense hasn’t been good with Pickett, who is starting over Trubisky for a reason.
