The Minnesota Vikings offense in 2022 was an impressive group. With Kirk Cousins, Justin Jefferson, and company navigating their way to a 13-4 record and a two-seed in the NFC playoffs, a lot of the team’s success can be attributed to the offensive group in Minnesota.
In 2023, Dalvin Cook has gone off to be a New York Jet, and other usual NFL roster churning has taken a toll in Minnesota. With that, the Vikings have a challenge in front of them to try and come out in the new year and regain that effectiveness that they had for most of the previous season.
All eyes will be on Cousins and the offensive staff as the team will look at this offensive unit once again to lead them back to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.
Who Is the Minnesota Vikings Offensive Coordinator?
Wes Phillips is currently the Vikings offensive coordinator. Phillips enters his 17th season coaching in the NFL, with last year being his first as an offensive coordinator; Phillips put up some impressive numbers in his debut.
In 2022, Phillips coached an offensive unit that finished seventh in the NFL in points scored, second in passing yards, and third in completions while helping Cousins set team records for passing attempts and first downs. They also accumulated the second-most completions and passing yards in the franchise’s history.
How Long Has Wes Phillips Been the Vikings Offensive Coordinator?
Phillips is entering his second season as the offensive coordinator in Minnesota. Before joining head coach Kevin O’Connell last season, Phillips was a pass game coordinator/tight ends coach for the Los Angeles Rams. That year, the Rams won Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Despite the lack of offensive coordinator experience, Phillips was literally born for this profession as he is a third-generation NFL coach. His grandfather is legendary coach Bum Phillips, who was the head coach of the Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints. His father, Wade Phillips, was a head coach for the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, and Dallas Cowboys.
Who Was the Offensive Coordinator Before Phillips?
Prior to Phillips, the offensive coordinator in Minnesota was Klint Kubiak. Kubiak was only in the role for 2021, and the team finished with an 8-9 record that year. Prior to Kubiak, it was another Kubiak, his father Gary, who was in the same role before him.
