Mike Tomlin Makes Feelings Clear on Russell Wilson, Discusses Veteran QB’s Future With Free Agency Looming

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ season ended with yet another disappointing loss to the Baltimore Ravens, 28-14. Fans are asking many questions about what happens next with the Steelers, especially at quarterback, particularly what it means for Russell Wilson.

Mike Tomlin Reflects on Team’s Loss to Ravens

The Steelers have relied heavily on their defense this season because their offense wasn’t up to par. Although Wilson’s play has been sufficient, it wasn’t good enough when it came right down to it.

According to PFN’s QB+ metric, he ranked 17th with a grade of C and a rating of 75.7. Nevertheless, Tomlin told reporters that his team as a whole was not good enough.

“It was like our play: it wasn’t good enough,” Tomlin told reporters after the game. “I just love the spirit in which he continued to fight, the way he led the group out of the locker room after the half. But certainly, none of us were good enough tonight.”

That doesn’t sound like a man ready to put his chips behind a starting QB who says he wants to come back to the Steel City.

“The Pittsburgh Steelers organization, man, it’s been such a blessing to be here. The guys that we have, the organization is truly first class. Love the city, obviously, what it means, not just to me and [wife] Ciara and our family, but just also the National Football League, it’s a special place with special guys and we got a special coach in Coach Tomlin,” Wilson said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

What’s Next for the Steelers at QB?

When asked about his quarterback situation next year, Tomlin was not ready to commit to who would start between Justin Fields and Wilson.

“I’m not ready to take a big-picture approach,” Tomlin said when asked. “I’m really assessing what happened today, man. I’m certainly appreciative of their efforts tonight, but I can say that, largely for the entire season, that [we had] three quality people (Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Kyle Allen) at the quarterback position, man, and I really appreciated what they poured into this.”

Tomlin may not be ready to decide because he doesn’t know his own future with the team. Also, it may depend on the QB contract situation for all parties involved.

Should the Steelers stay with Wilson or move forward with Fields or some other young quarterback? But the bigger question may be, do they go into rebuilding mode starting with their head coach?
