Dallas Cowboys legend Michael Irvin is never one to twist words. His latest impassioned plea to team owner Jerry Jones has sparked conversations across the NFL. Irvin, speaking on “SPEAK,” delivered a heartfelt “love letter” to Jones, urging him to make the right call and end the Cowboys’ 30-year Super Bowl drought.
Michael Irvin Pins Cowboys’ Hope for Glory Days on Deion Sanders
Irvin’s pep talk revolved around the need for a coach who can reignite hope for Cowboys Nation — and one name stood out above the rest: Deion Sanders. Irvin’s message to Jones will strike a nerve with fans.
“Jerry, you have a tough decision to make. With this decision, you must understand that it has been 30 long years. That drought is the longest drought of any NFC team [without an NFC Championship Game appearance]; that means one-third of Cowboys Nation has never lived the glory of a championship story,” Irvin said.
The former Cowboys wide receiver stressed the weight of Dallas’s three-decade championship drought. He highlighted the importance of hiring a leader who embodies togetherness, discipline, and the ability to inspire a collective will.
“The Bible says, ‘In all things have ye hope.’ Hope says that there’s something in front of me better than the last 30 years behind me. We need hope, and the only way you can spare hope for us is [spelling out] D, E, I, O, N, D, E, I, O, N, D, E, I, O, N. Deion Sanders will bring us that hope. Jerry, make the right decision because we cannot endure the wrong for another 30 damn years.”
Sanders, now an established name in the coaching world, revitalized Colorado’s football program. He took charge of a non-existent Buffaloes team in 2022 after they finished the season 1-11. During the first year in charge, Sanders felt the heat, posting a 4-8 record in 2023. His second season in Boulder, Colo., bore fruit; the Buffs finished with a 9-4 record and an Alamo Bowl appearance.
Along the way, Coach Prime developed NFL-ready talent, including Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and his quarterback son Shedeur Sanders, both of whom are now top prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft. While the former Dallas cornerback has expressed a strong commitment to Colorado, his informal conversations with Jones fuel the rumors of a possible return to Dallas.
“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders said. Though he reaffirmed his love for Boulder and his role in rebuilding Colorado, Sanders hinted at one exception that could sway him: coaching his sons. “The only way I would consider [leaving] is to coach my sons,” he revealed on Good Morning America.
For now, it’s just speculation, but Irvin’s plea has put pressure on Jones to make a bold move. Restless after 30 years of unfulfilled promises, Cowboys fans are hungry for change. Whether Sanders steps into the role or not, Irvin’s message is clear: Dallas needs a leader who can bring championship glory back to America’s Team.
