The Dallas Cowboys have had a challenging season this year. It’s not great timing for their head coach, Mike McCarthy, who’s reaching the end of his contract with the Jerry Jones-owned franchise.
Under McCarthy’s leadership, the Cowboys have secured a place in the playoffs three out of four times, the COVID year being the only exception. However, many analysts believe it’s time for him to go after their 5-7 record in 2024.
Despite the tough year this season, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott made a bold statement advocating for McCarthy, stating that he “wholeheartedly” believes in his head coach and that he deserves another chance with more influence under the new contract.
Former Cowboys Star Michael Irvin Rejects Dak Prescott’s Support for Mike McCarthy
While former Cowboys icon Michael Irvin thought it was admirable of Prescott to defend McCarthy and make a case for him, he hopes nobody is listening to the quarterback’s advice. Irvin believes the head coach is not the key for the Cowboys right now.
“It’s very admirable of Dak Prescott to support his head coach… but I hope ain’t nobody listening to him. The reality is he’s [McCarthy] not the key to the Cowboys right now.”

Irvin also touched on Prescott’s hint that McCarthy didn’t have as much power during his tenure and that he deserved another contract with more influence.
The ex-Cowboys star boldly disagreed with the statement and said the assumption that McCarthy didn’t have enough power was not true.
“You see, usually we go in there, we’re trying to blame everybody and say this is not Mike McCarthy’s team. That’s not true,” Irvin stated.
Irvin went on to emphasize that he likes McCarthy, but it is not part of the game; it’s reaching the playoffs and winning championships.
“I just want us to give everything we’re supposed to be. I like Mike McCarthy, but the name of the game ain’t ‘like.’ The name ain’t ‘feel good.’ It’s who I like emotionally. The name of the game is championships; put yours on the table.”
While McCarthy continues to be on the hot seat this season, many names are floating around in the NFL world to be his replacement, including Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders. Could Coach Prime possibly come to Big D in a package with his son Shedeur Sanders, who is one of the best quarterback prospects in this draft class?
