The Dallas Cowboys won their first game without Dak Prescott this past week. They defeated the Washington Commanders 34-26, and Cooper Rush had a pretty good game.
Prescott will miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury suffered in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. While Rush will be the team’s starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, franchise legend Michael Irvin wants the Cowboys to draft Shedeur Sanders and get Deion Sanders from Colorado.
Michael Irvin Wants Cowboys To Take Falcons’ Approach
Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million contract extension with the Cowboys before the start of the season. The 31-year-old quarterback’s contract makes it very hard for the team to trade him; despite that, Irvin thinks Dallas should try to draft the Colorado QB, which will urge his father to become the team’s head coach.
During a recent appearance on “Speak,” the Hall of Famer expressed his desire for the Cowboys to make this move, which would generate new hype around the team.
“We need Deion and Shedeur, that’s just what it is,” Irvin said. “We need something different, we need something explosive, and we need someone who can give us new hype.”

Irvin further emphasized copying the Atlanta Falcons’ model of drafting a quarterback while already having a solid veteran on a big deal. He added, “I love what Atlanta did. Atlanta stacked up on quarterbacks. … I don’t mind stacking up, Dak can play another year or two before you let him go, and then it’s the kid’s time.”
It is not certain that Coach Prime will be open to leaving Colorado to coach his son’s team in the NFL. However, if a team like the Cowboys ends up getting Shedeur Sanders, then Jerry Jones has the ability to get the quarterback’s father into the NFL.
It will undoubtedly create a lot of buzz around the Cowboys, which their owner loves. However, the possibility of that happening is still quite low. With the win against the Commanders in Week 12, the Cowboys are now 4-7 on the season and have likely played themselves out of the position to draft Sanders.
It will be quite surprising if Dallas goes all in and trades up in the 2025 NFL Draft to get the Colorado star. Their current roster needs an upgrade to contend next year, and the best possible way to do that is via the draft. As a result, although Irvin wants his former team to make headlines, it would be wise for them to consider other options unless they somehow end up with the first overall pick.
Should the Cowboys Move On From Dak Prescott?
No matter what people say about Prescott, it’s hard for an NFL team to get a quarterback of his caliber. There is a buzz around Sanders, but nobody knows whether he’ll ever be half as good of a player as the Cowboys quarterback already is.
Prescott is 2-5 in the playoffs, and that is a cause for concern, but the Cowboys franchise has not made the NFC Championship Game since 1995. The team has a lot of issues, but the quarterback is not the main one.
After this season, the Cowboys’ main priority should be to get the right head coach who can get the best out of the current group of players. Stars like Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs, CeeDee Lamb, and Prescott are tough to find, and a good head coach can make this team a Super Bowl contender.

However, for that to happen, Jones must also be at his best. The failure to address the running back position this past offseason has hurt the Cowboys a lot this year, and the front office needs to make sound decisions in the draft and in free agency to support whichever head coach they decide to hire.
As for Prescott, he is under contract through the 2028 season, and it doesn’t make sense for the team to draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Getting Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty should be something that the NFC East franchise should seriously consider.
