Cowboys’ Michael Gallup Heading for Dallas Exit: Chiefs, Bills Among Top Landing Spots for Former 1,000-Yard WR

Michael Gallup isn't expected to be with the Cowboys in 2024. Receiver-needy teams like the Chiefs and Bills are among strong landing spots.

The Dallas Cowboys are in the process of losing a former 1,000-yard wide receiver, as Michael Gallup is expected to be on the move.

While Gallup is four seasons removed from racking up 1,107 yards, he’s still considered an option for teams seeking wideout help. Time to dive into who would best suit the veteran WR.

Potential Landing Spots for Michael Gallup as Dallas Departure Looms

Both the franchise and the seven-year veteran wideout agreed to mutually part ways on Saturday, with Gallup being permitted to seek a trade, according to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. Watkins, though, adds that Gallup may not command a high trade market.

Therefore, this means Gallup is facing a potential release from the Cowboys. Regardless of whether it’s via trade or cut, Gallup can use his veteran wideout expertise at these following potential landing spots.

Kansas City Chiefs Need Additional WRs

As wide-receiver friendly as the Chiefs’ offense is, the back-to-back Super Bowl champions are still in the market for perimeter help.

The Chiefs could opt to wait until draft night and see if NFL Combine record-breaker Xavier Worthy is available (Worthy revealed his hope for playing with Patrick Mahomes on Saturday). But, K.C. has added veteran help in the past — with the addition of names like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Kadarius Toney via signing or trade.

The Chiefs have already released “MVS” and are likely to part ways with Toney. Head coach Andy Reid and Mahomes could welcome some veteran hands in the form of Gallup.

If released, Gallup likely won’t command a massive salary. After all, he’s produced three straight seasons of less than 40 catches. He could also be worth a late or conditional pick if K.C. and Dallas want to work a trade deal.

Buffalo Bills Can Address Need for Stefon Diggs Help

As stout as Stefon Diggs and Josh Allen have been as an explosive collaboration, Buffalo has lacked consistent help outside of the former.

Gabe Davis likely won’t be back (PFN’s Dakota Randall predicts the Chiefs will sign the Bills veteran). Gallup eventually settled into a WR2 role anyway in Dallas as CeeDee Lamb became the Cowboys’ go-to receiver. So playing second to Diggs shouldn’t come as a problem.

And on Gallup’s end, he could follow the footsteps of Cole Beasley as past Cowboy receivers who ended up in western New York.

Carolina Panthers Present Bevy of WR Needs

Say Gallup wants one last crack at reestablishing himself as a 1,000-yard receiver and a possible No. 1. That’s where Charlotte, N.C., could become that destination.

Carolina is building around Bryce Young with Dave Canales going all in on the 2023 first overall pick. Gallup would present a cheap, veteran option, but one who could provide leadership in a WR room that needs it.

The Panthers, though, likely won’t have Gallup high on their list with Calvin Ridley, Marquise Brown, and Darnell Mooney being available and without any franchise tags. But with salary cap restrictions on their end (Panthers have only $11.9 million in cap space), they may need to pivot to Gallup.

Jaguars Present Strong Potential Landing Spot

Jacksonville already brought in backup assurance for Trevor Lawrence by trading for Mac Jones on Sunday, but they still have WR to address.

The team is expected to have a hard time re-signing Ridley. Jacksonville could also turn to the NFL Draft to address WR. Local star from Florida State Keon Coleman could be one option at No. 17.

But with Ridley’s pending status, Gallup can be a veteran depth move for Jacksonville.

    Chargers New Team To Monitor

One last possibility, but a team that bears watching, is the Los Angeles Chargers.

New reports during the weekend of March 9 revealed Mike Williams and six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen could become trade material. If moved, the Chargers will be clearing up some significant cap space with both facing more than a $30 million cap hit.

If they are traded away, the Chargers will need immediate WR help. As it is, Quentin Johnston underwhelmed as a 2023 first rounder and Joshua Palmer has had an oft-injured career. Gallup is obviously not an exciting addition but a needed one if there are changes in L.A.
