‘Can Take a Franchise and Elevate It’ – Miami HC Mario Cristobal Makes a Case for Cam Ward As the No. 1 Overall Pick

Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal reveals reasons why Cam Ward should be the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Miami Hurricanes star Cam Ward is one of the best players in this year’s draft class and is projected by many analysts to be the No. 1 overall pick.

Unlike the 2024 NFL Draft, there is no clear first overall pick in 2025, as there was with Caleb Williams last year. The No. 1 spot race is wide open between QB Cam Ward, QB Shedeur Sanders, EDGE Abdul Carter, and even CB/WR Travis Hunter.

However, Miami’s head coach, Mario Cristobal, has no reservations about Ward going at the highest pick this year.

Miami Head Coach Mario Cristobal Shares Reasons Why Cam Ward Should Be the No. 1 Pick

While the quarterback competition between Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders is in full force, with many people picking the Miami star for his Patrick Mahomes-like confidence on the field, others like Joel Klatt believe Shedeur is the better player because of his arm strength and accuracy.

During a conversation with ESPN, Cristobal explained why Ward is the best in this year’s draft class and why the former Hurricanes signal-caller deserves to be the No. 1 overall pick.

“I think he should be drafted first overall because he’s the best competitor and the best overall player in the country, and his competitiveness, his way of being, the way he affects some people around them. He’s second to none. I mean, he’s a guy that has changed the profile of our university and has certainly elevated everybody around him. I just think he’s a guy that can take a franchise and elevate it and everybody in it.”

When asked about Ward’s leadership style, Cristobal said it’s unique. He prefers to lead his team like an offensive lineman or a linebacker rather than a quarterback.

“He’s he’s one of a kind. I mean, you would think he doesn’t lead like a quarterback; he leads more like an offensive lineman or a linebacker. He’s really enthusiastic and has tons of energy. He’s very alpha. Now, if you can’t deal with an alpha, it might not be your thing, but he’s the right kind of alpha where he’ll light a place up, but he’ll also galvanize everybody around him. He’s as special as I’ve ever been around.”

The 2025 NFL Draft will occur in Green Bay, Wisconsin, from the 24-26th April.
