MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Training camp Day No. 1 is in the books for the Miami Dolphins, who got part-time work out of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and a scary exchange early involving safety Jevon Holland.
Find all that and more in our first Miami Dolphins practice report of 2024 training camp.
Miami Dolphins Practice Report July 24
Injury Report
Holland went head over heels on just the second snap of 7-on-7 snaps Wednesday after inadvertently getting low-pointed by rookie receiver Malik Washington on a bang-bang play.
Holland, who missed six games (including the postseason) with two injured knees in 2023, stayed down on the field for a bit as the team’s medical staff evaluated him. He tried to return to practice but could only make it a few snaps before leaving for good.
The issue didn’t seem major, however.
“It’s football,” said teammate Jalen Ramsey. “Things happen.”
The Dolphins began training camp with six players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list: Linebackers Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, David Long Jr., and Cameron Goode; guard Isaiah Wynn; and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
Active roster players who did not participate Wednesday: Tackle Terron Armstead and running back Chris Brooks.
The Dolphins will take special care of Armstead to increase the likelihood that the oft-injured Pro Bowler makes it through the season healthy. Brooks was not a full participant in spring ball.
Quarterback Report
As the team had telegraphed prior to practice, Tagovailoa continued his contract hold-in that began in the spring.
He went through individual drills and got a lot of work in 7-on-7s, but didn’t throw a pass in team drills (he did go under center twice in 11-on-11s, only to hand the ball off).
Tagovailoa was sharp in the work he did, although he did throw an interception to linebacker Zeke Vandenburgh on a pass tipped by Siran Neal.

As for his backups, Skylar Thompson and Mike White resumed their QB2 competition, but neither had a particularly noteworthy day.
Fourth-stringer Gavin Hardison was severely off-target Wednesday, throwing interceptions while under pressure in back-to-back plays, missing the handoff because he couldn’t get out from under center fast enough, and throwing a prayer into triple coverage that should have been picked by Marcus Maye.
Stock Up
- DT Brandon Pili made a strong opening argument to make the Dolphins’ 53-man roster, with multiple pressures and at least one sack.
- CBs Ramsey and Kendall Fuller gave an early taste of what was possible together. Each jumped routes on balls thrown by Dolphins backups. The entire defense was the better of the two units on Wednesday.
- WR Jaylen Waddle continues to have an excellent 2024. He climbed the ladder to reel in a tough pass from Thompson and then hung onto a ball across the middle from White that funneled him into a collision with Jordan Poyer.
Stock Down
- Hardison is getting the few reps he is because Tagovailoa is sitting out. But if he wants to remain with the team, he needs to get his act together. The Dolphins’ offensive weapons struggled to get good work in Wednesday when Hardison was on the field.
- The Holland collision was Washington’s most unfortunate moment, but things went from bad to worse when he dropped a pass shortly thereafter.
- The Dolphins will tinker with their offensive line for the next month, but it was a tough start for Jack Driscoll, who botched a quarterback-center exchange with Thompson.
