With the 2024 NFL league year approaching quicker every day, starting on March 13, the league continues preparing for the 2024 NFL Draft and free agency. This includes plenty of teams scouting quarterbacks, looking to improve upon the most important position.
For the New York Giants, there’s a tough question of whether or not to replace Daniel Jones in this year’s draft. According to one NFL draft analyst, the Giants should not take a quarterback.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Believes Giants Should Not Take Quarterback
Heading into the 2024 NFL Draft, which takes place April 25-27, the Giants hold the sixth pick in the first round. While it’s unlikely they’ll get their pick of the top two quarterbacks in the draft (Caleb Williams and Drake Maye), there’s a chance they’d get to pick between Jayden Daniels, J.J. McCarthy, or some of the other top QBs in the NFL Draft.
However, ESPN’s expert analyst Mel Kiper believes that they shouldn’t consider those guys and should stick with Jones. “Daniel Jones has already shown he can be a winning NFL quarterback, a really good quarterback,” Kiper said. “He needs help. We talked about what New England didn’t do with their guy [Mac Jones].”
“The Giants get more help, stay healthier, get guys healthy, get it together, maintain some consistency, and Daniel Jones is the right man for the job,” Kiper said. On his most recent big board, Kiper has Williams, Daniels, and Maye all ranked too high for the Giants to have a chance to pick them (first, third, and fifth, respectively).
Jones has played five seasons for the Giants, compiling 12,512 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 40 interceptions. He’s also had 1,914 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. His record as the starting quarterback was 22-36-1.
However, Jones suffered a torn ACL in 2023 that ended his season early. He had played in just six games, going 1-5 while passing for 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions.
While the top three quarterbacks on Kiper’s board are likely out of the Giants’ range, McCarthy isn’t, whom Kiper ranked at No. 23. in 40 games at Michigan, McCarthy passed for 6,226 yards, 49 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for 632 yards and 10 more touchdowns.

However, Kiper just simply believes Jones is better than McCarthy and is confident in it. “Daniel Jones and J.J. McCarthy. Daniel Jones is gonna be a better quarterback,” Kiper said.
Kiper has been a major part of ESPN’s annual NFL draft coverage since 1984. He’s widely known for establishing mock drafting and is viewed as one of the first to spearhead the industry to what it is now.
