Matthew Stafford’s Wife Kelly Opens Up on Why She Feels Sorry for Joe Burrow

Joe Burrow's struggles with the Bengals reminds Matthew Stafford's wife of his struggles during his Detroit Lions days.

Matthew Stafford was the Detroit Lions’ starting quarterback for more than a decade before being traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021 after the Lions concluded the season with a disappointing 5-11 record.

After the trade, when the Rams first went head to head against the Lions, the fans booed Stafford, his wife, Kelly, and their daughters. While Stafford successfully broke many franchise records as their quarterback, the family’s time there wasn’t the easiest one, as Kelly explains in her podcasts.

Recently, when talking about the Joe Burrow-Cincinnati Bengals situation, she compared his and Stafford’s time with the Lions.

Kelly Stafford Draws Comparisons Between Joe Burrow and Matthew Stafford’s Journeys

During one of her latest episodes of her podcast, The Morning After Media, Kelly talked about how Burrow’s situation reminds her of Matthew’s while he was with the Lions.

“Bengals and the Chargers, that was such a good game. It was impressive, to be honest, it is reminding me of when Matthew played on the Lions for a bit. Like you can tell how good and talented he is; it’s just that the team is not winning, which is frustrating.”

Kelly’s observation is not totally off; Burrow has been showcasing his abilities week after week. However, the Bengals aren’t really helping him win any games.

In the 2024 season, Burrows has been sacked a total of 26 times, taking the spot of the 11th most sacked person this year.

Kelly Stafford Shares Her Experience of Getting Booed by Lions Fans

During Matthew’s debut against the Lions at Ford Field, it’s safe to say the fans didn’t exactly give him or his family the warmest welcome.

Following the Lions’ close 24-23 win, Kelly shared her experience from the game and revealed that the booing wasn’t exclusive to the former Lions quarterback.

“You were specifically booing my husband when he ran on that field, and that’s OK,” Stafford said. “I truly don’t know what I expected. But I wasn’t surprised.”

“My girls and I are not playing the game. I know that my girls are not getting booed. I am, and I can handle it,” Stafford said. “But when I have my girls next to me, there’s something to be said of like, maybe not?”
