Mac Jones Dynasty Profile: Fantasy Outlook, Value, Projections, and Rankings

After nearly getting benched last season, what does Mac Jones' future look like, and what is his value in dynasty fantasy football leagues going forward?

As we inch toward the new season, the ever-changing NFL landscape has player fantasy values constantly on the move. Whether you’re used to the dynasty platform or are still learning the rules, let’s dive into the latest dynasty fantasy football value of Mac Jones.

Mac Jones’ Dynasty Outlook and Value

When the Patriots installed their rookie first-rounder as the Week 1 starter in 2021, no one in the fantasy community thought Jones would immediately be a fantasy factor. But this was a player in the conversation to be the second or third overall pick. The expectation was he’d more likely than not be the Patriots’ long-term answer at quarterback.

Jones’ first two seasons have been rocky, to say the least. He had a solid rookie year, throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions while completing 67.6% of his passes. Unfortunately, Jones didn’t progress as a sophomore.

Instead, his completion percentage dipped to a still very good 65.2%. However, he averaged nine fewer passing yards per game and threw just 14 touchdowns in 14 contests. He was even benched for 2022 rookie fourth-rounder Bailey Zappe at one point.

While Jones ultimately got his job back, there are now serious questions as to whether he’s an NFL-caliber starting quarterback. Heading into the 2023 season, the Patriots are at least in the market to acquire a veteran. They have quickly soured on Jones.

Fantasy managers were never overly excited about Jones, but there was always the chance he could emerge into a QB1. That seems to be unlikely now after two seasons of Jones failing to even finish as a QB2.

He averaged 14 fantasy points per game as a rookie, and that dipped to 12.9 in his second season. As a rookie, he reached 18 fantasy points in six games. Last year, he did it just four times, one of which was in Week 18.

    Mac Jones’ Fantasy Ranking

2023 will be a make-or-break year for the third-year QB. After this season, the Patriots will have to make a decision on Jones’ fifth-year option, and unless his play improves, it seems doubtful they will pick it up. That would set the stage for Jones to play the second part of his career somewhere else, likely as a backup.

Sadly, that seems to be Jones’ path in the NFL. I’m confident he belongs in the league, and he may very well get a chance to start during his second contract, especially given the lack of startable options in the NFL right now. But Jones has shown nothing to suggest he will ever matter in fantasy outside of Superflex leagues.

We currently have him at QB23 (No. 97 overall) in our dynasty Superflex rankings. That seems really high, but when you look at the guys behind him, it makes sense.

If every starting quarterback is rostered in your dynasty league, you obviously can’t outright drop Jones. I imagine every team is rostering at least two in most leagues. That leaves Jones as someone on the back of your roster, but he is not someone you ever want to be starting. Nor should you have any interest in him in dynasty startup drafts.
