The Washington Commanders selected Luke McCaffrey with the No. 100 overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Here’s everything you need to know about the rookie wide receiver and his journey to the NFL.
How Tall Is Luke McCaffrey?
McCaffrey made the move from quarterback to wide receiver while at Rice, which certainly helps his physical measurements stack up a bit more favorably. McCaffrey’s 6’1 5/8″ height puts him in the 60th percentile compared to his peers at the wide receiver position. However, his arm length (30 1/8”) ranks in the 17th percentile.
How Much Does McCaffrey Weigh?
McCaffrey is also on the smaller side for an NFL wide receiver, as his 198-pound frame puts him in the 42nd percentile at the position. For comparison, he is smaller than his older brother, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, who weighed in at 202 pounds at the 2017 NFL Combine.
How Old Is McCaffrey?
Born April 2, 2001, McCaffrey turned 23 years old just a couple weeks before the NFL Draft. Because of his spring birthday, McCaffrey will not turn 24 years old until he gets ready for his second season in the NFL.
What School Did McCaffrey Go To?
McCaffrey attended Valor Christian High School in Colorado, where he became a four-star prospect who drew plenty of attention given his genes. His father, Ed McCaffrey, had an excellent NFL career with 7,422 receiving yards and 55 touchdowns.
He started his college career at Nebraska as a quarterback but occasionally contributed as a ball carrier.
After spending two seasons as a member of the Cornhuskers, McCaffrey transferred to Rice ahead of the 2021 college football season. He spent three years as a member of the Owls to finish his college career.
Revisiting McCaffrey’s College Career
McCaffrey’s collegiate production looks closer to a high school player who was asked to do a little bit of everything on the offensive side of the football.
McCaffrey’s impact as a passer during the first three years of his college career was mostly pedestrian. His career totals in that department were 88 completions for 921 yards with five TDs and 10 interceptions. To be fair, McCaffrey was definitely a dual-threat option under center, rushing for 662 yards and six rushing TDs on 130 carries during the first three years of his career.

McCaffrey transitioned to wide receiver on a full-time basis entering the 2022 season after transferring to Rice, taking off with 58 receptions for 723 yards and six scores.
He improved across the board during his final collegiate season with the Owls in 2023 with 71 receptions for 992 yards and 13 touchdowns while adding an extra 117 yards on the ground.
McCaffrey’s 40-Yard Dash Time
McCaffrey had a terrific showing at the NFL Combine, running a 4.47-second 40-yard dash.
McCaffrey’s 40-yard dash put him in the 69th percentile in direct comparison to his peers at wide receiver. Believe it or not, Luke actually ran a faster 40 than his brother, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (who ran a 4.48).

Luke also recorded a 6.7-second three-cone drill, which put him in the 87th percentile. His 4.02-second 20-yard shuttle put him in the 91st percentile of that category, as well.
