Los Angeles Chargers Coaches: Who Is on Jim Harbaugh’s Coaching Staff?

Jim Harbaugh is ushering in a new era of Chargers football, including revamping nearly the entire coaching staff ahead of the 2024 season.

The Los Angeles Chargers are entering 2024 under new leadership on the coaching side.

Gone is Brandon Staley, who produced one playoff appearance in 2022 but got fired on Dec. 15 after the team’s disastrous 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Enter Jim Harbaugh, who’s returning to the NFL realm and for a team he once played quarterback for.

Harbaugh will be roaming an NFL sideline as head coach for the first time since the 2014 season when he was with the San Francisco 49ers. He spent the last decade at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, where he walked away with the 2023 National Championship.

After taking over the Chargers, Harbaugh pulled off a near complete sweep of Staley’s 2023 coaching staff. Muschamp was retained by Harbaugh on the defensive side. Serchia is another holdover from the Staley regime.

Gould and Ficken are the last returning assistants from the ’23 staff and will continue their roles on the special teams side.

New Additions to the Chargers’ Coaching Staff

While there will be four one-time Staley assistants returning to the Chargers’ staff, Harbaugh is also bringing in names he’s most familiar with.

Roman was Harbaugh’s top offensive deputy during his time with the 49ers. The 51-year-old’s most recent coaching stint came with the Baltimore Ravens from 2019-22, working under Jim’s older brother John Harbaugh.

Trestman is another long-time NFL name joining the Chargers. The 68-year-old one-time Chicago Bears head coach last coached for the Tampa Bay Vipers of the XFL in 2020. He also held down general manager duties before the franchise moved to Las Vegas in 2023. He’ll be in a senior assistant role with Los Angeles.

On defense, Minter is another former John Harbaugh assistant joining the younger Harbaugh. Minter spent 2017-20 with the Ravens. However, he then ran the Michigan defense from 2022-23 under Jim and will now bring his scheme over.

Bowman is one more major addition to the staff. The Pro Bowl linebacker starred for Harbaugh from 2011 to 2014. Bowman coached at Maryland in 2023.
