Live from the East-West Shrine Game: Practice Day One

The 2020 East-West Shrine Game is on Saturday. The week's festivities get underway today with day one of practice. PFN's Tony Pauline is down in St. Petersburg to provide the latest news and notes.

The 2020 NFL Draft season really kicks into high gear beginning this week with the 95th annual East-West Shrine Game from St. Petersburg, Florida. The game itself will take place on Saturday, January 18. But just as with the Senior Bowl, which will be held next week in Mobile, it’s the practices that NFL scouts are here for. The first practice sessions of the week will begin today when the North squad takes the field at Tropicana Field around 1:10 pm ET. That will be followed by the South team practice at 4:10 pm ET.

Like previous years, there are many players on the Shrine Game rosters who will find themselves in NFL camps this summer. The East squad is led by quarterbacks Kevin Davidson (Princeton) and James Morgan (FIU). The West squad is headlined by running back James Robinson (Illinois State) and linebacker Mykal Walker (Fresno State).

The full Shrine Game rosters can be found here.

Pro Football Network Draft Analyst and Insider Tony Pauline is down in St. Petersburg this week and will bring us all of the latest news and insight.

Live observations from Tony Pauline at East-West Shrine Game practice

1:00 pm ET: Join us shortly as practice is set to get underway from Tropicana Field in just a few minutes.

1:30 pm ET:  Navy quarterback Malcolm Perry looks real good in WR drills. He is running sharp routes and doing a great job extending to snatch the ball away from his frame. Soft hands.

1:35 pm ET: Princeton QB Kevin Davidson is showing off a big-league arm. He easily drives his deep throws.

1:45 pm ET: Both Miami LBs Shaq Quarterman and Mike Pinckney are really struggling in coverage drills. They are continuously getting beat by RB/TE.

1:55 pm ET: Very impressed with West Georgia DT Auzoyah Alufohai. Looks really strong and has been tough to handle.

1:57 pm ET: SMU safety Rodney Clemons made several nice plays in one-on-one. Do not sleep on this guy.

2:00 pm ET: Berry College WR Mason Kinsey is looking good in the early going. He runs terrific routes and catches the ball very well.

2:25 pm ET: FIU’s quarterback James Morgan looks good. He is on the money and has great timing on his throws to brand new receivers.

2:28 pm ET: Michigan’s Mike Danna looks the part and has made a few nice plays, especially in one-on-ones.

2:30 pm ET: Michigan CB Lavert Hill just made a great play in full scrimmage, knocking a pass away. I like his ball skills a lot but speed is a big question.

2:35 PM ET: Syracuse DE Kendall Coleman has shown some great edge speed but cannot get off blocks once he’s engaged with opponents.

4:15 PM ET: Oregon’s OL Calvin Throckmorton is lining up as a guard during West practice and looks very natural. Love his vision, awareness and blocking feel.

4:20 PM ET: Michigan State’s Tyler Higbee is also lining up at guard. He is primarily a LT at MSU. He blocks with great fundamentals but doesn’t finish his blocks.

4:20 PM ET: Nebraska’s Khalil Davis looks good in the early going. Plays with great pad level and looks really strong.

4:25 PM ET: Oregon’s Juwan Johnson is one big dude. He looks like a tight end stuck in the receiver group by accident.

4:25 PM ET: West quarterbacks are all over the place with their passes throwing against air.

4:30 PM ET: Boise State WR John Hightower just dropped a beautifully placed 50-yard bomb that Missouri’s Kelly Bryant placed in his hands.

4:35 PM ET: Khalil Davis looks unstoppable early on in West practice. Boise State’s Hightower just came back and made a nice leaping catch.

4:40 PM ET: Baylor’s DT Bravvion Roy has been another defensive lineman tough to stop. He has shown some incredible power.

4:40 PM ET: I’m told Clemson OL Sean Pollard, who is listed on the Shrine Bowl roster, is expected to be present tomorrow after playing in tonight’s National Title game.

4:50 PM ET: A lot of good one-on-one battles going on between SDSU’s Daishawn Dixon and Michigan State’s Raequan Williams.

4:50 PM ET: Arizona State’s Cohl Cabral is having a solid day at center. Surprisingly effective in motion and on the second level.

4:55 PM ET: Raequan Williams is showing some impressive athleticism at times.

5:10 PM ET: NDSU’s Derrek Tuszka has shown a lot of good things. He is currently outplaying Montana State’s Bryce Sterk.

5:30 PM ET: Louisiana G Kevin Dotson is having a nice day. He has terrific fundamentals and position blocking.

The lights just went out at Tropicana Field. Linemen still slugging it out.

5:35 PM ET: SDSU TE Parker Houston has done a great job blocking all afternoon.

Lights back on. Back to full scrimmage.

5:40 PM ET: Illinois State RB James Robinson is having a nice little day for himself as both a ball carrier and pass catcher.

5:50 PM ET: The East had a snappy 60-minute practice. We are close to the 2 1/2 hour mark with the West practice.
