The first matchup of Sunday night’s doubleheader features the Packers heading to Empower Field at Mile High to take on the Broncos.
The Packers enjoyed an excellent preseason debut, taking down the Cleveland Browns 23-10 on the road. QB Jordan Love went three-and-out, but it was probably the most exciting three-and-out for Packers fans, throwing a 65-yard TD to WR Dontayvion Wicks on the game’s third play.
Sean Clifford looked good after the Packers pulled Love from his brief appearance. He completed 10 of his 19 passes for 111 yards and led the Packers on three scoring drives. Even 2024 seventh-round pick Michael Pratt completed five of seven passes for 46 yards on a field goal drive. The Packers continue to look solid as the WRs and Love settle in for another season.
Additionally, Green Bay has a hotly contested kicker battle between Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph. Carlson, the Packers kicker last season, completed 81.8% of his field goals. While he was perfect from 39 yards and in, he struggled to convert field goals in the 40s (50%), and he hit only 60% of field goals beyond 50. Additionally, he missed five extra points.
Meanwhile, the Broncos also emerged victorious in their preseason debut, taking down the Indianapolis Colts 34-30. After two rough drives from Week 1’s starter, Jarrett Stidham, ending in a punt and interception, 2024 first-round QB Bo Nix got a chance to show his stuff, and the rookie came out firing.
In his first NFL preseason drive, Nix completed two passes for 33 yards as he set up Denver in a position to tie the game with a field goal. He then led them on another scoring drive, tossing a one-yard TD to Marvin Mims Jr. to take a 10-3 lead. He helped lead Denver to its first 20 points on offense before being replaced by Zach Wilson.
Speaking of Wilson, he helped lead the Broncos to two touchdowns. After a season of rough offensive performances, the Broncos looked like a well-oiled machine, even for a preseason game. While the Broncos could use a better performance from their defense, the early returns from the offense are extremely promising.
