Lions vs. Chiefs NFL Kickoff Game: Sportsbook Reports ‘Massive’ Bet

The 2023 NFL season is almost here, and the Detroit Lions will visit the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs to kick things off. Coming off a 9-8 season in which they went 8-2 in the final 10 weeks of the season, the Lions enter 2023 with playoff aspirations.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, are this year’s Super Bowl favorites and look to become the first team to repeat since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots.

    Sportsbook Reports ‘Massive’ Chiefs Bet

The Chiefs are currently 6.5-point favorites for the NFL season kickoff. With the spread being relatively high, one bettor at Caesars Sportsbook has deferred to taking them to win straight up instead, placing a huge wager on their moneyline.

    That’s a lot of money.

Although the Los Angeles Rams got blown out 31-10 by the Buffalo Bills in the 2022 season opener, the recent trends are certainly in this bettor’s favor. In the last 18 NFL season openers featuring the previous year’s Super Bowl winner, the defending champion has gone 14-4 straight up.

According to Caesars Sportsbook, there is an overwhelming amount of action on the Chiefs to win. Currently, 86% of the bets and 95% of the money they have taken on the moneyline for this game are on the Chiefs. The percentages are more balanced on the spread, with 54% of the bets on the Chiefs and 66% of the money on the Lions.

Expect more big bets to come in as we get closer to the season kickoff date of Sept. 7, even six-figure wagers like this one reported by Caesars. After a long offseason with no NFL games outside of the preseason, the season opener is always one the most anticipated games of the year for bettors.
