As we inch toward the new season, the ever-changing NFL landscape has player fantasy values constantly on the move. Whether you’re used to the dynasty platform or are still learning the rules, let’s dive into the latest dynasty value of Khalil Herbert.
Khalil Herbert’s Dynasty Outlook and Value
Evaluating the Bears’ running back situation is quite the challenge right now.
Herbert has done enough to show Chicago he deserves a role. In five games without David Montgomery, Herbert averaged 13 ppg. We know he’s fantasy relevant when he’s the feature back.
Herbert didn’t get there on pure volume, either. He was legitimately good and efficient. Herbert’s rates of evaded tackles per touch and yards created per touch were inside the top 10. His 5.7 yards per touch ranked seventh in the league.
If we knew for a fact that Herbert was going to enter the 2022 season as the Bears’ RB1, he would be a top-24 running back in both dynasty and redraft. Unfortunately, Herbert comes with a whole host of uncertainty.

First and foremost is Montgomery’s status. The 2019 third-rounder has been the team’s lead back since his rookie season. Now, he’s a free agent. Will the Bears re-sign him? If they do, then Herbert’s value goes back to where it was the past two seasons — a handcuff RB3/4. He would be an afterthought for the most part.
But what happens if Montgomery leaves? Just because the Bears let Montgomery walk doesn’t mean Herbert becomes the lead back. For as well as Herbert has played, he’s still a former sixth-rounder. We know how the NFL views Day 3/UDFA players. Chicago could very well sign a veteran or spend another Day 2 pick on a rookie.
This places dynasty managers in a tricky spot. If you have Herbert, trading him now could be maximizing value. You also could be kicking yourself a couple of months from now when the Bears commit to him as their lead back.
Khalil Herbert’s Fantasy Ranking
I don’t see Herbert as a player possessing nearly enough upside to want to acquire him. I’m always in favor of amassing talent at value, but unless I can get Herbert for what amounts to nothing, I’m not really interested.
I’ve seen this story too many times before with guys like him. I would ultimately be surprised if he was any team’s RB1 at any point in his career (other than due to injury).
Our ranking of him as RB32, No. 101 overall in our latest dynasty Superflex rankings, tries to thread the needle of the potential for Herbert to be the Bears’ lead back with the likelihood he’s in a committee.
I’m fine if you want to take a shot at acquiring Herbert for cheap, but he’s not someone I’d look to select in dynasty startup drafts.
