Keyshawn Johnson Shares 1 Condition Where the Cowboys Should Extend Mike McCarthy’s Contract (It Involves Deion Sanders)

    Published on

Former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson discussed the state of the Dallas Cowboys' coaching situation amid a disappointing 2024 campaign.

Former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson believes that Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys need to be realistic about who their head coach of the future is. In a recent episode of the popular sports show “Speak,” Johnson outlined some potential coaching options, including Deion Sanders. He explained that current coach Mike McCarthy may not be as bad an option as the general public is saying he is.

For almost the whole regular season, McCarthy has been at the forefront of the criticism placed on the Cowboys. Despite having a generally successful reign as head coach over the past couple of seasons, McCarthy and the Cowboys have struggled this year and are already eliminated from playoff contention.

What Did Johnson Say About Mike McCarthy and Deion Sanders?

Johnson believes that McCarthy has been successful during his time in Dallas, and he thinks that discipline problems this year and poor free agency decisions, most likely out of McCarthy’s control, were a large reason behind the struggles.

In addition, he explained how “Prime Time” Deion Sanders would be a great fit, but there are not too many options that are better than McCarthy.

“If it’s Deion Sanders, you and I are going to jump up and down on the table; if you’re not getting Prime, who else are you getting?” Johnson stated.

Are the Cowboys a Coaching Change Away From Success?

Although much of the recent debate has been about the coaching situation in Dallas, there are fundamental roster problems that present a challenge to any coach who takes or keeps the job.

The Cowboys have struggled at the running back position all year long and have been unable to consistently move the ball on the ground in necessary running scenarios. Next, though better in recent weeks, the team has been unable to stop the run defensively either, something that has seen opposing teams take advantage of this on numerous occasions.

The Cowboys are averaging 95.2 rushing yards per game, a value that is 28th-best in the league. Furthermore, the defense has allowed 135.9 rushing yards per game, something that ranks them 27th-best in the National Football League.

While it remains to be seen what the coaching situation looks like next year in Dallas, it is evident that there are roster problems that need to be addressed if the team wants to return to its past success.
