Philadelphia Eagles backup running back Kenneth Gainwell exited the NFC Championship Game against the Washington Commanders after he suffered a concussion in the second half.
Gainwell was limited in practice on Wednesday, Feb. 5, but is anticipated to be able to play in Super Bowl 59.
What Is Kenneth Gainwell’s Injury?
Gainwell suffered a concussion against the Commanders two weeks ago and is still in the concussion protocol.
When you play behind Saquon Barkley, there are not a lot of opportunities to get in the game, but when Barkley needs a breather, Gainwell spells him effectively.
Gainwell created a niche spot for himself as RB2 this season. He totaled 406 yards from scrimmage, while maintaining a career-high 25.3 yards per kick return average.
He was a limited participant in the Eagles’ first practice on Wednesday, Feb. 5, his first action since sustaining the injury on Jan. 26.
Will Gainwell Play in the Super Bowl?
Gainwell must complete the concussion protocol, and a host of doctors must clear him if he wants to grab his helmet and play in Super Bowl 59. He did appear coherent at the Opening Night festivities at the Super Bowl on Monday, Feb. 3, which indicates he is on the road to recovery.
However, being able to speak during interviews is a far cry from being able to take a pounding during an NFL game. Whether Gainwell can get out of the protocol and into the game is still to be determined.
The Eagles’ medical staff will continue to monitor Gainwell’s progress through the NFL’s five-stage concussion protocol as the team prepares for Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans.
His health and participation could be important for Philadelphia’s game plan, particularly given his experience against the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57. He gained 41 yards on 11 carries and picked up multiple key first downs.
How Would Gainwell’s Absence Impact the Eagles?
The Eagles could turn to rookie running back Will Shipley from Clemson, who is no stranger to big games.
He played on many meaningful stages in college and performed well against the Commanders. He rushed for 77 yards on just four carries. He also ripped off a 57-yard touchdown in Gainwell’s absence.
Shipley could be a major factor in the Super Bowl if something should happen to Barkley and Gainwell is unable to go.
