    Published on

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert suffered a fractured middle finger on his non-throwing hand in Week 4. How is it affecting him entering MNF in Week 9?

In the Los Angeles Chargers’ Week 4 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, Justin Herbert suffered an injury to his left hand. It was later revealed that he had fractured his middle finger on his non-throwing hand.

The injury has not caused the quarterback to miss any time, but has his finger fracture caused any adjustments to his performance?

    Justin Herbert Finger Fracture Update

During the matchup against the Raiders in Week 4, Herbert was shaken up after throwing an interception to safety Tre’von Moehrig near the end of the third quarter. He took a trip to the blue medical tent and returned to the game with a splint on his left index finger and a bandaged hand.

The following Monday, NFL Network announced that Herbert fractured his finger and suffered a “gruesome” nail injury on his left hand. He then had a bye week to rest the injured hand before suffering a loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6.

The team then took a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and a win against the Chicago Bears. Going into Week 9, Herbert is still dealing with the injury.

In the losses to the Cowboys and Chiefs, Herbert struggled as he completed just 58.2% of his passes for 486 yards with three passing touchdowns and three interceptions.

For the games against the Cowboys and Chiefs, Herbert played with a glove on and a wrap over his finger. Against the Bears, The Chargers tried to put a large splint over a slightly smaller glove to fit over the splint, but the glove finger ripped on a handoff, causing him to decide to take off the glove.

During media availability, Herbert said that wearing a glove helps him grip the ball better while also serving as protection.

“Every day it’s getting better,” Herbert said after the loss to the Chiefs. “We’re coming up on four weeks, so just doing everything I can to limit the pain, and every time I’m out here being safe.”

This season, Herbert has completed 68.7% of his passes for 1,890 yards, 13 touchdowns, and four interceptions.
