One of the biggest storylines at the start of the 2025 NFL free agency period involves quarterback Justin Fields, who is weighing his options between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets. With the buzz around his decision growing, Fields appears relaxed, enjoying his time in Dubai.

Justin Fields Feeling at Peace in Dubai?
NFL insider Adam Schefter posted a photo from Justin Fields’ Instagram story showing the free agent quarterback enjoying a decorated coffee drink while in Dubai.
Fields celebrated his 26th birthday on March 5 and is hoping to celebrate a new contract in free agency. His market value, according to Spotrac, is a one-year deal worth $6.4 million.

After the Chicago Bears drafted him in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields played three seasons in Chicago before being traded to the Steelers in March 2024. This is the young QB’s first time testing free agency. While he’s not projected to land a massive contract, Fields finds himself in a potential bidding war between the Steelers and Jets.
What the Steelers Can Provide Fields
Reports indicate the Steelers have shown more interest in keeping Fields than in bringing back 36-year-old veteran Russell Wilson.
After trading for Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf, Pittsburgh has positioned itself as a top destination for a free agent quarterback.
What the Jets Can Offer Fields
On the other hand, the Jets see Fields as a potential replacement for Aaron Rodgers, who has reportedly begun discussions with Pittsburgh. Under new head coach Aaron Glenn, the Jets are looking for a quarterback to bridge the gap without breaking the bank. The team does have 35-year-old journeyman Tyrod Taylor under contract for 2025, but he hasn’t played a full season as a starter since 2017 with the Buffalo Bills.
Fields has indicated he wants to learn more about the Jets’ offer and situation before making a decision. Pittsburgh’s choice to bench Fields in favor of Wilson, despite a winning record, would understandably make Fields hesitant to return. However, would Fields want to go to the Jets only to find himself in another quarterback competition with Taylor?

Jets or Steelers? Who Has the Edge?
Which team will give Fields the highest level of job security as a starter? The Jets’ track record in that department has been rough, with the team toying with former top draft pick Zach Wilson. Can the Jets’ new regime convince Fields they’re different?
Fields’ decision will play a key role in how the quarterback market shakes out in free agency. If Fields stays in Pittsburgh, the Jets could be left with fewer options than other QB-needy teams. Other than Fields, there aren’t many quarterbacks under 30 who have proven themselves. It would be surprising if the team brought back Sam Darnold. Signing an older quarterback could also go against the new regime’s vision for their rebuild.
