Eagles Star EDGE Josh Sweat, an Upcoming Free Agent, Just Earned Himself a Massive Payday With Super Bowl 59 Performance

Eagles EDGE Josh Sweat had a dominant showing in Super Bowl 59 and now he'll be able to cash in as a free agent this offseason.

During Super Bowl 59, the Philadelphia Eagles dominated all facets of the game and quarterback Jalen Hurts took home Super Bowl MVP honors.

However, on the defensive side of the ball, it was EDGE Josh Sweat who made plays all over the field. As an upcoming free agent, it’s safe to say that Sweat earned himself a monster payday this offseason.

Josh Sweat Is About To Get a Lucrative Contract In Free Agency

Hurts deserves a ton of credit for his strong play, as he finished with 293 total yards (221 passing and 72 rushing) and three touchdowns (two passing and one rushing).

However, Sweat filled the stat sheet as well, recording a career-high 2.5 sacks, six tackles, two tackles for a loss, and three QB hits.

After not recording a single sack during the Eagles’ postseason run to this point, he stepped up in a major way on football’s biggest stage.

As ESPN’s Next Gen Stats noted, Sweat generated a team-high six pressures on 34 pass rushes. The Eagles were able to record six sacks against Mahomes without blitzing once.

Sweat is an upcoming free agent, and he likely made himself quite a bit of money with his monster performance in Super Bowl 59. Sweat is currently the No. 3-ranked free agent on PFN’s Top 100 Free Agent Rankings.

Here’s what PFSN’s Ben Rolfe wrote about Sweat’s upcoming free agency in our top-100 ranking: “How you evaluate Josh Sweat’s 2024 season largely depends on where you source your data, Some databases have Sweat with just 16 pressures, while others have him with more than 50. Even if you take the higher of those two numbers, a pressure rate of 14.1% ranks outside the top 60 at the position.

“However, Sweat was impactful with those pressures, resulting in eight sacks. Among the free-agent pass rushers available, that is the second-highest number, behind only Dante Fowler Jr. The lack of elite pass-rushers in this class boosts Sweat’s overall value in free agency, given the impact the pass rush can have on a game.

“Also playing into Sweat’s hands is an impressive 16.8% tackle rate, which makes him the most all-around pass-rush weapon in free agency this year. While he is not in the class of T.J. Watt or Micah Parson, Sweat is a solid option for any team looking to add a weapon to their defense, and he could be looking at a contract in the region of $15 million a year.”

The 27-year-old has recorded 43 sacks over the course of his seven-year career.

It remains to be seen if he’ll continue his career with the Eagles or if a team will make a big offer to get him to change scenery.
