Josh Allen Injury Update: Latest News on Bills QB After Brief Exit vs. Texans Week 5

    Published on

Josh Allen has been one of the NFL's best quarterbacks to begin the 2024 season, but he went down with an apparent injury in Week 5. Here's the latest.

Josh Allen has been among the NFL‘s best players through the first month of the 2024 campaign, guiding the Buffalo Bills to a 3-1 record entering Week 5.

Unfortunately, Allen went down with an injury in Buffalo’s game against the Houston Texans on Sunday. What happened to Allen, and what’s his current injury status?

What Happened to Bills QB Josh Allen in Week 5?

Allen took a hard hit from Texans defender Mario Edwards after throwing an incomplete third-down pass with roughly six minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Allen received attention from Buffalo’s training staff and was evaluated in the medical tent along the Bills’ sideline.

Fortunately, Allen returned to Sunday’s game after Buffalo’s offense got the ball back via a Houston fumble. Backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky took the field for the Bills’ first snap of that drive, but Allen re-entered the contest on the second play of the series.

Allen was incomplete on his second and third-down passing attempts, forcing Buffalo to settle for a game-tying field goal with just over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Allen completed just nine of 30 attempts for 131 yards and one touchdown in the Bills’ 23-20 loss to the Texans.

After the game, Allen indicated he slightly injured his ankle and was also evaluated for a concussion.

“Big shot to the chest, and I rolled my ankle there,” Allen said. “They flagged me for hitting my head, but felt good enough to go back in the game.”

Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott said, “Josh is a warrior. Took a pretty good hit out there and came back for his team and teammates.”

The Bills visit the New York Jets for Monday Night Football in Week 6. Buffalo has lost two straight games, to the Baltimore Ravens and the Texans, dropping to 3-2 on the season.

    Fantasy Implications of Allen’s Injury

Fantasy’s top QB for the remainder of the season was slammed to the ground by the Texans as he was navigating pressure late in the game — a situation that Allen finds himself in more often than most, given how he plays the position.

Week 5, for the most part, was a struggle for Buffalo’s passing attack (sans one big play from Keon Coleman), but those instances are few and far between. Should Allen miss time, none of these receivers will be of interest, while James Cook remains a weekly starter and one with a little more scoring equity.
