Jonnu Smith Contract Details: Miami Dolphins Sign Tight End to 2-Year Deal

    Published on

The Miami Dolphins are signing free agent tight end Jonnu Smith to what is reportedly a two-year contract worth upwards of $10 million.

The Miami Dolphins will have a better collection of tight ends in 2024 than they did in 2023.

PFN can confirm that the Dolphins are adding veteran Jonnu Smith to a two-year deal that ESPN reports is worth up to $10 million.

Contract Details for New Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith

While the exact contract details won’t be made public until it’s filed with the union, the move guarantees the Dolphins will spend more on the position this year than they did last, when Miami dedicated just $5.1 million total to its tight ends — which ranked in the bottom quarter of the league.

With Smith aboard, the Dolphins should rank in the middle of the pack in terms of 2024 tight end investment.

Smith, who went to school locally at FIU, was in Miami Gardens Tuesday for a free agent visit.

Since he was what was known as a street free agent — meaning that he would have been under contract in 2024 had the Atlanta Falcons not cut him — the Dolphins could sign Smith prior to the start of free agency next week.

Smith had 50 catches for 582 yards and three touchdowns for the Falcons, who acquired him via trade from the New England Patriots last March.

He was a disappointment for the Patriots after signing a four-year, $50 million free agent contract in March 2021. Smith had just 55 catches for 539 yards and one touchdown in his two seasons with the Patriots, earning $26.8 million from New England during that stretch.

He now joins a TE room that prior to his signing featured Durham Smythe (who had 35 catches for 366 yards and no touchdowns in 2023), Julian Hill (6-48-0), and Tanner Conner (no catches).

Smith, 28, was a third-round pick by the Tennessee Titans out of FIU after he totaled 2,001 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns during his four seasons in West Miami-Dade.
