What Is Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh’s Career Record?

Let's examine John Harbaugh's career record, plus how his success compares to other NFL head coaches and former Ravens coaches.

Since John Harbaugh took over as the Baltimore Ravens head coach, they have made the playoffs in 11 of 16 seasons and only finished under .500 twice. Over that span, Baltimore has won five AFC North titles, appeared in four AFC Championship Games, and hoisted the Lombardi Trophy once. Let’s examine Harbaugh’s career record, plus how his success compares to other NFL head coaches (past and present) and former Ravens coaches.

    Examining John Harbaugh’s Career Record

    • Regular Season: 167-103
    • Playoffs: 12-10
    • Overall: 179-113

Harbaugh is the owner of 179 career victories with the Ravens, including the postseason. The 62-year-old boasts an overall record of 179-113. In the regular season, he’s 167-103.

With that mark, Harbaugh is both Baltimore’s winningest — and losingest — head coach.

He’s already surpassed the previous leader, Brian Billick, in both wins and losses. However, Harbaugh’s .613 winning percentage is by far the highest in franchise history.

Harbaugh is one of only three head coaches in Ravens history. The team’s first coach was Ted Marchibroda (.344 winning percentage) from 1996-1998 before turning to Billick (.556 winning percentage) from 1999-2007.

Harbaugh is the longest-tenured head coach in Ravens’ franchise history, and he’s also currently the second-longest-tenured head coach in the NFL.

    • He’s helped capture five AFC North division crowns, the most in franchise history.
    • His Ravens teams average 10 wins per regular season. Billick’s teams averaged eight wins, while Marchibroda only averaged five wins per year.
    • Harbaugh has only missed the playoffs five times in his 16 seasons.
    • The Ravens have reached 11+ regular-season victories six times under Harbaugh.
    • Baltimore has made the AFC Championship Game four times under Harbaugh.
    • Harbaugh is the last Ravens coach to lead a Super Bowl run, which happened during the 2012 season when Baltimore hoisted th Lombardi Trophy as a Wild Card team.

Where Does Harbaugh Rank Among Winningest NFL Coaches Past and Present?

With Harbaugh nearing 20 years as the Ravens head coach, does that mean he’s one of the NFL’s all-time winningest head coaches?

As a matter of fact, he is. Harbaugh’s 179 wins currently rank 16th all-time, and he’s just two wins away from tying Pete Carroll and cracking the top-15.

For reference, the winningest head coach in NFL history is Don Shula, who won 347 games across 33 seasons with the Baltimore Colts and Miami Dolphins. Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is the closest to Shula, with 333 wins.

As for current head coaches, Harbaugh has the fourth-most wins among active head coaches, trailing only Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy (182), Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin (188), and Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid (294).

It’s worth noting that Harbaugh is only 62 years old—a decade younger than Belichick—so he could continue coaching for quite some time if he desires.
