Joe Montana Explains What Could Stand in the Way of Patrick Mahomes’, Chiefs’ Historic Super Bowl 3-Peat Attempt

NFL icon Joe Montana looks back at his failed three-peat attempt and pinpoints the issues ahead for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

In Super Bowl 59, Patrick Mahomes will lead the Kansas City Chiefs as they attempt to etch their names, once again, in the history books. The defending champions are on course to become the first-ever team in the NFL to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

However, NFL icon Joe Montana has cautionary words for the hopefuls. He too, like Mahomes, dreamt of a three-peat. But Montana fell short and now, he’s pointing out possible roadblocks for the Chiefs.

Joe Montana Pinpoints Issues That Could Derail Patrick Mahomes’ 3-Peat Goal

Before the Chiefs reached the Super Bowl for a third consecutive season, Montana’s San Francisco 49ers were the closest team to a three-peat.

Montana won Super Bowl 23 in 1989 and Super Bowl 24 in 1990. They also thrived in their third season, ending the regular season with a 14-2 record but failed to win the NFC Championship Game against the New York Giants.

During his recent interview, the former 49ers and Chiefs quarterback highlighted the issues with three-peating, and why no team has ever been able to pull it off.

“The seasons are long, the off-seasons are short,” he said. “Usually, the thing that comes into play the most is the health of players. Usually, you’re not always at 100% strength, as your body doesn’t have its usual time to repair itself during the off-season.”

“And when you compound that over the years, and then if you were in the playoffs the year before, it makes it even worse from the first Super Bowl that we won. So, I think that’s probably the biggest part of it.”

“I mean, the pressure, obviously, to win consistently, probably adds a little bit to it. But, you know, once the game gets going, I don’t think people feel that as much.”

Tom Brady Wants Mahomes to Shine

Another great quarterback who attempted to three-peat but failed, Tom Brady, is also in Mahomes’ corner. Brady will be covering the game as a broadcaster with Fox and will try to remain unbiased. However, the gravity of history is not lost upon him.

“Well, I’m broadcasting the game, so I don’t really have a rooting interest per se,” Brady said. “The only thing I root for in these situations are great games. I will say if the Chiefs win, I will be very happy for them. I mean, what they’ve achieved is unmatched.”

The Chiefs will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans with the Lombardi Trophy, and a three-peat, on the line.
