Former Michigan and current Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton III is an intriguing prospect entering the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
Standing 6’5″ at 245 pounds, Milton has arm strength that rivals top-tier talents in the league. At his pro day on Wednesday, he showed off his skills.

“I feel like I threw the ball really well,” Milton said. “… I feel like every team wants to take (deep) shots, and not every quarterback can do it. And they love that about my game.”
Milton, who split his college career between Michigan (2018-20) and Tennessee (2021-23), threw for 2,831 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions last season, completing 64.7% of his passes.
During his pro day, Milton worked quite a bit under center rather than in shotgun formations. At Tennessee, Milton was rarely under center. It is shotgun formations “24/7” at Tennessee, according to Milton.
“My main goal (in pre-draft workouts) is to be under center more,” Milton said. “… I’m fine (under center). I actually like playing slow, to be honest. I know we play a fast pace here — Coach (Josh) Heupel is going to be mad at me for saying that — but I like playing slow. I feel like you get to see everything, and I’m big on details.”
While Milton surely has an NFL arm, he is predicted to be drafted in the late rounds due to inconsistencies in his performance throughout the years.
He will likely be labeled as a project instead of a starter at the NFL level due to his unrefined footwork, questionable decision-making, and inconsistencies getting past the first read in his progression.
In addition to showing off his arm strength on Tennessee’s pro day, the QB flexed his speed as he ran a 4.56-second 40-yard dash.
“It went great,” Milton said. “I feel like I ran what I needed to run, for one. For two, I feel like I threw the ball very well. Shoutout to the guys who caught the balls for me today.”
Per the Daily Beacon, in his conversations thus far with NFL teams, leadership and confidence have been two of the points that have come up for Milton. He has heard a couple of teams say that they can tell how confident he is based on how he carries himself and his walk.
Tennessee saw one of its former quarterbacks drafted last year, with Hendon Hooker selected in the third round by the Detroit Lions, and Milton should follow in his footsteps as being the next promising Volunteers signal caller in the NFL.
Pro Football Network’s Derek Tate suggests that the New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks, and Los Angeles Rams all make sense as potential landing spots for Milton.
