J.J. McCarthy Landing Spots: Giants, Falcons, and Saints Headline Best Spots for Michigan QB

J.J. McCarthy has high-level arm talent but never had to carry his team in college. Where are some sensible landing spots for the Michigan QB?

J.J. McCarthy is one of the more polarizing prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft. While he has the tools to be a high-level quarterback in the NFL, he doesn’t have the same level of college production as the other top quarterbacks.

Nevertheless, McCarthy has the arm talent to go as high as the top 10. Where are some potential landing spots for him in April?

McCarthy is unlike others in the “high potential, less production” mold in that he’s been a consistent quarterback who makes few mistakes. He has a 48:11 career touchdown-to-interception ratio and has been extremely efficient in college.

McCarthy’s pure volume numbers are well below others in pass-heavy offenses, and that’s mostly because Michigan hasn’t ever had to rely on his arm to win.

In fact, McCarthy didn’t attempt his first fourth-quarter pass of the season until Week 10 against Purdue after sitting in blowouts for the first eight games. The physical tools are there, and with a strong national championship and Combine, he could shoot up boards.

    New York Giants

I’m of the opinion that McCarthy will ultimately drop out of the first round. In that case, the New York Giants could be prime contenders for his services.

There are huge needs on this roster, but if McCarthy is available early on Day 2, the Giants could be waiting to pounce.

After enduring years of poor decisions from a litany of quarterbacks, New York fans could eventually view McCarthy as a breath of fresh air. He has the athleticism to run this offense in its current form.

    Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are in a weird position this offseason. Arthur Smith has been fired, and the Falcons are now reportedly vetting his replacement.

Atlanta has elite athletes all over the field but hasn’t involved them nearly enough. McCarthy spreads the ball around the field well and has a quick release and good footwork that would serve him well in a West Coast offense.

    New Orleans Saints

Despite signing Derek Carr last offseason, the New Orleans Saints don’t seem satisfied at the quarterback position. Of all the potential landing spots for McCarthy, this could be the best for his career.

Behind Carr, there would be less pressure to start right away. Additionally, the Saints have the talent to take pressure off of McCarthy, so he doesn’t have to do everything himself for the first time in his career.
