The time has finally come for Jimmy Johnson to take his rightful spot in the Dallas Cowboys‘ Ring of Honor.
After nearly three decades of a soap opera from Jerry Jones and Johnson, the legendary coach will now take his more than deserved position in the Ring of Honor. Johnson will be the 24th Cowboy to be inducted into the Ring of Honor.
The ceremony will happen during halftime on Saturday when the Cowboys take on the Lions at AT&T Stadium.
Cowboys Will Induct Jimmy Johnson Into Ring of Honor
ESPN will broadcast the ceremony live on Saturday since this is a long-overdue moment in Cowboys’ history.
In five seasons with the Cowboys, Johnson led the team to two Super Bowl championships. Five of Johnson’s players during his tenure became part of the NFL’s Hall of Fame, including Troy Aikman, Larry Allen, Charles Haley, Michael Irvin, and Emmitt Smith.
Johnson will now join all of these players in the Ring of Honor. Plus, in a very full-circle fashion, Aikman and Joe Buck will be on the call for the game and in attendance for the ceremony.
The announcement was made that Johnson would be welcomed into the Ring of Honor in November during a Fox broadcast ahead of the Cowboys’ Week 11 matchup against the Panthers.

During the announcement, Jones said, “I can’t have thought then, can’t believe now, that we were able to experience such a time in our lives, and you know Jimmy, they talk about the Ring of Honor… There’s never been any question for what you need to be in the Dallas Cowboys’ Ring of Honor.”

The legendary coach wasn’t shy about posting his excitement for the ceremony on social media.
On Friday, Johnson posted a graphic on Instagram with the caption, “Going to be a fun night!”
Current Cowboys Share Their Respects
During the week, Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott were asked about Jimmy Johnson. McCarthy described Johnson’s induction as a “big picture moment.”
He also said he had spent time with Johnson recently, adding, “I’ve had the unique opportunity to spend some time with Jimmy [Johnson] just in the last year. I was in Florida last year at spring break. I spent some time with him on his boat. I have a great appreciation for him and all that he’s done. I’m a big fan.”
Although Prescott grew up a Cowboys fan, he is too young to have watched the Cowboys through the Johnson coaching era.
But that doesn’t mean he lacks appreciation for the history being made at halftime. In fact, the quarterback says the enshrinement was overdue.
“Growing up a Cowboys fan, knowing the history, knowing everything that he accomplished honestly in a short time, it’s overdue. Just glad that it’s happening,” said Prescott.
The current Cowboys’ coaching staff and personnel join Cowboys fans looking forward to the long-overdue moment in franchise history.
