Jimmy Garoppolo Injury Update: Back Injury Lands Raiders QB in Hospital

Jimmy Garoppolo was banged up as the Las Vegas Raiders went into the locker room at halftime. What do we know about the QB's injury?

Jimmy Garoppolo was visibly limping during the Las Vegas Raiders‘ final drive of the second quarter. What do we know about the quarterback’s injury, and how will this change the Raiders offense if he’s forced to miss action?

From the current NFL standings to team depth charts to coverage of every game in the 18-week NFL schedule, we have all the news from around the league to keep you up to speed!

    Jimmy Garoppolo Injury Update

Garoppolo is no stranger to injuries. He’s already missed one game for the Raiders in 2023 with a concussion, and he has missed significant time throughout his years as an NFL QB with a myriad of different injuries.

Garoppolo appeared to injure his leg at some point, but the injury was later designated as a back injury. He was in visible pain on the sideline before walking into the locker room with the training staff.

Garoppolo’s injury history is extensive. He suffered an A/C joint sprain in 2016 while relieving Tom Brady. Then, in 2018, he tore his ACL in Week 3. In 2020, he sprained his right ankle and missed two games. After reinjuring the ankle in November, he was forced out of action for the rest of the season.

In 2021, Garoppolo sustained multiple injuries. He seriously injured his thumb in Week 16 and had to miss the final four games of the season. And after playing well for the 49ers in 2022, he broke his foot, making way for Brock Purdy … eventually.

MORE: Las Vegas Raiders Depth Chart

This was always going to be on the horizon for Las Vegas. It’s never a guarantee that someone remains healthy or gets hurt. However, it’s not easy to trust someone with such a rich injury history.

He is doubtful to return against New England. Brian Hoyer will take over in his absence.

Update (6:07 p.m. ET): The Raiders X (formerly Twitter) account confirmed that Garoppolo is OUT for the remainder of the game. But that isn’t the most significant news to drop about Garoppolo’s status.

    Potential Fantasy Football Impact

Garoppolo led the Raiders to a 13-3 lead over the Patriots by throwing for 162 yards and a score before heading to the locker room at halftime. An injury to Garoppolo would likely lead to Brian Hoyer under center against the Pats with Aidan O’Connell inactive.

An injury to Garoppolo would also move both Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers slightly down the fantasy rankings at the WR position. Hoyer will come in around the top 25 in the QB rankings should Garoppolo miss any time with an injury in the coming weeks.
