Jimmy Garoppolo Injured: What We Know About the 49ers Quarterback

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo was carted to the locker room after injuring his ankle against the Miami Dolphins Sunday.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was knocked out of the San Francisco 49ers‘ massive game against the Miami Dolphins and replaced by rookie Brock Purdy.

The seventh-round pick out of Iowa State is the third quarterback to play for San Francisco this year after injuries sidelined both Garoppolo and Week 1 starter Trey Lance. Purdy entered the game in the first quarter following an early injury by Garoppolo.

After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Garoppolo broke his foot and will be out for the remainder of the season.

“He’ll be out, he’ll need surgery, broke a few things in there,” Shanahan told the assembled media after his team’s win over the Dolphins.

Garoppolo was initially ruled out after injuring his left foot on the 49ers’ first drive of the game. His foot buckled when Dolphins edge rusher Jaelan Phillips dragged him down on a third-down sack.

Garoppolo’s injury is a massive blow to a Niners team with Super Bowl hopes. They entered Sunday’s game on a four-game winning streak, and Garoppolo was playing great football in relief of Lance, who suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2.

Garoppolo entered the game having completed 67.4% of his passes for 2,381 yards, 16 touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Purdy, meanwhile, had thrown just nine NFL passes entering Sunday’s game, completing four for 66 yards and an interception. The rookie had a strong game on Sunday, though, passing for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception while helping San Francisco to a 33-17 win over Miami.

He was an accomplished college passer as well. In four seasons at Iowa State, he threw for over 12,000 yards and 81 touchdowns.

And he very much looked the part in his first drive in relief Sunday, orchestrating a nine-play, 54-yard touchdown drive capped by a three-yard touchdown pass to fullback Kyle Juszczyk.
