The Dallas Cowboys‘ 2023 season didn’t end how they wanted, with a shocking upset loss in the postseason. However, they’re built to return and dominate again next year. They need to get through the offseason first, though.
The biggest part of the Cowboys’ offseason this year might have to do with quarterback Dak Prescott. They need to extend him, and owner Jerry Jones knows it. What did Jones have to say about Prescott’s future with the team?
Jerry Jones Says Prescott Is Dallas’ Quarterback
Prescott was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Cowboys, where he’s spent his entire NFL career. At 28 years old, Prescott signed a four-year, $160 million deal in 2021 that included $126 million guaranteed.
Now, there’s just one year left in the deal, in which he will make a base salary of $29 million. In addition to that, he has a $59.4 million cap hit. The Cowboys could extend him this offseason and move that money back as well as lock him up with the team.
According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, Prescott wants to re-set the quarterback market and approach $60 million per year, which would be the highest in NFL history. Currently, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow leads the way, making $55 million per year.
“We’ll be working on his contract as we get into the future days of this coming year,” Jones said when asked about Prescott’s contract situation. “What we do there, don’t do, I couldn’t say at this time. The main thing is that he’s going to be our quarterback.”
In his eight-year NFL career, Prescott has been named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. He’s also a three-time Pro Bowler and one-time second-team All-Pro. He finished the 2023 campaign as a finalist for the NFL’s MVP.
Prescott has passed for 29,459 yards, 202 touchdowns, and 74 interceptions. He also has 1,884 yards and 28 touchdowns on the ground. In 114 starts, Prescott has led the Cowboys to a 73-41 record.

Jerry isn’t the only one to say Prescott will be a Cowboy, as his son Stephen Jones said something similar. “Dak will be our quarterback,” said the franchise’s COO.
One thing that makes the Cowboys’ contract situation extremely important is that, in Prescott’s contract, the team can not franchise tag him nor can they trade him. Their options are pretty much do nothing, add voidable years to his deal, or sign him to a big-time contract extension.
