Does Jerry Jones Believe Mike McCarthy’s Job Security Depends on Postseason Success?

    Published on

The latest update from Jerry Jones on whether Mike McCarthy's job security depends on the Dallas Cowboys' postseason success.

Mike McCarthy has led the Dallas Cowboys to a 12-5 season with the postseason ahead as the NFC East Champions and the No. 2 seed in the NFC.

But a winning record isn’t anything new for the head coach. McCarthy has led the Cowboys to three straight seasons with 12 wins, the first time in franchise history.

Dallas scored 485 points in 2023, the second-most points scored in a season in team history. McCarthy’s 2021 Cowboys team is the team that has more.

Although McCarthy has been the team’s head coach since 2020, he also took over the playcalling duties this season.

But recent reports stated that McCarthy’s job could be in jeopardy if the team doesn’t have a deep playoff run.

The team hasn’t been to an NFC Conference Championship since 1994, and the biggest question this postseason is if McCarthy can be the head coach that ends the Cowboys’ dry spell.

Jerry Jones’ Response to the Speculation

Jerry Jones spoke to the media after the Cowboys’ dominating win against the Commanders and addressed the reports about McCarthy’s job security.

“I just feel so grateful,” said Jones, adding, “To the coaches, Mike McCarthy leading the way. To the players staying true to their work ethic.”

Jones said McCarthy’s record speaks for itself. The head coach has a 42-25-0 record with the Cowboys.

With 41 wins, McCarthy had the most wins of any Cowboys coach in franchise history through their first four seasons.

“I think what he’s done, the fact that we’ve put ourselves in this position over the last three years. I think that does speak for itself and we’ve got a lot of football left and no small part thanks to Mike, thanks to his staff, and thanks to some really outstanding football players,” said Jones.

However, the end of his response keeps the questions circulating if McCarthy’s job is on the line in the postseason, adding, “So we’ll see how each game goes.”

Cowboys vs. Packers Wild Card Matchup

The Cowboys are taking on the Packers in the Wild Card Round on Sunday at AT&T Stadium.

The team has the longest-running home-win streak in the NFL at 15 consecutive victories.

Jones said he’s excited for the fanbase to see the level of football the Cowboys have been playing replicated against the Packers.

The Packers ended the Cowboys’ season in 2016, but Jones says something stayed with them.

The Cowboys have the opportunity to change the narrative that has followed them in the postseason for nearly three decades.
