Javon Hargrave’s Contract, Salary, Bonuses, and Net Worth

Is Javon Hargrave under contract with the Eagles for 2023, and why is he currently set to count nearly $12 million against the salary cap?

Javon Hargrave has been a big piece of the Philadelphia Eagles, but what is his contract situation heading into the 2023 NFL offseason? Let’s take a look at whether Hargrave is likely to be with Philly in 2023 and why he could count for nearly $12 million against the cap this year.

    Javon Hargrave’s Contract Details

As a free agent in 2020, Hargrave signed a three-year contract worth $39 million. The deal contained $25.5 million in guaranteed money, including a signing bonus of $11.75 million. Hargrave’s contract runs from 2020 to 2022, meaning he is set to be a free agent in 2023.

Despite being a free agent in 2023, Hargrave is set to count for $11.956 million against the Eagles’ cap next year. The reason for that is the contract contains three void years. The Eagles’ front office included the first two void years in the original deal to spread the cap impact of the signing bonus over five years at $2.45 million per year instead of just three years.

The other void year was added in 2021 when the Eagles restructured Hargrave’s contract. They converted $11.76 million in base salary into a signing bonus. That was prorated between 2021 and 2025 at $2.352 million per year. When the contract voids in late February, the remaining prorated money will accelerate onto the Eagles’ 2023 salary cap.

The Eagles could prevent that big dead-money number from hitting the cap by signing Hargrave to an extension. That would stop the money from 2024 and 2025 from accelerating onto the cap in 2023. However, Hargrave’s market value according to Spotrac is $20.1 million per year. That means it would be a big outlay for the Eagles if they want to avoid managing $11.956 million in dead money.

As a free agent, Hargrave could become the third-highest-paid DT in the NFL. Spotrac’s comparisons for him include the deals given to Cameron Heyward, Aaron Donald, Fletcher Cox, and Michael Brockers. Hargrave’s two-year performance is similar to the average output of those four over a two-year period; that is where the $20.1 million-per-year projection originates.

    Hargrave’s Net Worth

There is a wide range of net worth estimations for Hargrave. Some sites have Hargrave’s net worth at around $5 million, while others have it in the region of $17.5 million. What we do know is that Hargrave’s career earnings in the NFL currently sit at $43.419 million. Based on market value estimations, those career earnings could jump up in a big way as a free agent this offseason.
