Should I Draft Jared Goff? Lions QB’s Fantasy Outlook in 2023

Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff had a stellar 2022 season and looks to build on it this year. Can fantasy football managers expect continued growth?

Given expectations, Jared Goff was a fantasy football cheat code at times last season, and the Detroit Lions looked to improve their offense around their signal-caller this offseason. The lack of mobility is a problem in 2023, but some can overcome that, and Goff certainly did at times in 2022.

    Jared Goff’s Fantasy Outlook

After a tough first season in Detroit, Goff thrived (specifically at home) in 2022 and is now on the fantasy radar as the rare non-rushing-but-effective option. Amon-Ra St. Brown is back as the driving force for Goff’s aerial production, and some touchdown luck in 2023 would go a long way toward helping Goff crack the top 12 at the position.

As for the other pass-catching options … it’s thin. Jameson Williams will miss the first six games and is battling an injury, while Marvin Jones’ best days are behind him. DJ Chark is now in Carolina, and this will be the first full season sans T.J. Hockenson, losses that will be felt when trying to evaluate Goff’s per-game upside.

Where he could stand to gain this season is the running back position. Touchdown vulture Jamaal Williams is now in New Orleans, leaving the door open for some scoring variety. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery take the place of Williams and D’Andre Swift, a duo that could take Goff to that next level.

Is Goff a Good Fantasy Pick?

He’s not a bad pick by any means, but he’s easily below the “Wat-Line”.

What is the “Wat-Line” you ask? Deshaun Watson. That is my cutoff for where I am comfortable leaving the draft with a single quarterback. Drafting Goff is fine, especially given the friendly end-of-season weather run, but under no circumstance is he going to be my only quarterback exiting the draft room.

If you’re willing to bet on Goff late, it might be worth it to throw a dart on a non-St. Brown receiver. Goff is going to need some help to threaten QB1 status, and we know it won’t come with his legs.
