Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston made a bold statement about whether he believes star dual-threat athlete Travis Hunter can play both receiver and cornerback in the NFL next season. While appearing as a guest on the popular Rich Eisen Show, Winston and Eisen discussed the Heisman Trophy, as well as if it was feasible for Hunter to continue playing both positions down the line.
Over the past month, Winston has played well for the Browns since taking over as their starting quarterback due to the season-ending injury to Deshaun Watson. In that timeframe, Winston has thrown for six passing touchdowns and four interceptions, leading the struggling Browns to two notable divisional wins against the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.
What Did Winston Say About Hunter Playing Both Sides of the Ball?
Eisen asked Winston point blank, “Do you think Travis Hunter can do the both offense/defense thing in the NFL?” Without much hesitation, Winston promptly responded, “There’s no doubt that he can do both.”
Winston continued by discussing how it is possible for the young phenom to do so, but he should follow what he truly wants to do and not simply continue with both positions if he believes focusing on one is the correct path forward.
Winston: “The question I would have, you know like, what does your heart desire?”
Will Hunter Play Both Offense and Defense in the NFL?
While the decision would ultimately rest with both the player and the NFL franchise, Hunter has alluded that he intends to play both sides of the ball at the professional level. Although this extraordinary feat is rarely done in the NFL, Hunter possesses unique skills and talents not common in the league, either.
On the campaign, Hunter has equally impressive offensive and defensive statistics, something that makes him the favorite for the Heisman Trophy, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and one of the most exciting prospects in years.
Offensively, Hunter has elite speed and great hands. To this point, he has 82 catches for 1,036 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns. He has also added one rushing score as well.
Defensively, Hunter has great anticipation and footwork, something that has resulted in three interceptions and one forced fumble on the season.
While it remains to be seen whether he plays both positions in the NFL, Winston believes that Hunter has the talent and mindset to succeed at the highest level.
