Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey had to be carted off the field during Thursday’s training camp practice session after suffering what appeared to be a left knee injury. Ramsey was injured during an 11-on-11 rep and was subsequently evaluated by Miami’s medical staff before a cart took him to the locker room.
Jalen Ramsey Injured During Miami Dolphins Training Camp
UPDATED (6:17 p.m.): Thursday evening, Ramsey posted the following message on Twitter that suggested he won’t be back on the field in the short term:
“I’ll be back on that field stronger than ever… in due time! This SO minor for God’s child! I trust fully & know He got me! Im forever grateful to worship His name! I know my brothers gone hold it down until I’m back tho! 🤟🏾🧡
Appreciate the love & support!
Time to get right!”
Minutes later, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that while Ramsey’s ACL is intact, he will undergo surgery that will cause him to miss the start of the season. NFL Network later specified that Ramsey suffered a meniscus injury and could miss anywhere between six weeks and four months.
Ramsey was covering wide receiver Tyreek Hill on the play in which the injury occurred. Head coach Mike McDaniel, cornerback Xavien Howard, and safety Jevon Holland all came to Ramsey’s aid once he went down.
“You know, everybody’s worried about him,” Holland said after practice. “I’m not really sure what’s wrong.”
After practice, fellow cornerback Kader Kohou suggested Ramsey’s injury won’t be a long-term concern, although there hasn’t been any official word from the team.
“He’s gonna be good,” Kohou said.
Ramsey represents the Dolphins’ most significant addition of the offseason. Miami sent a third-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams to acquire the 28-year-old in March while assuming the three years and $55 million remaining on his contract.
The Dolphins parted ways with cornerback Byron Jones earlier this year after three underwhelming seasons, including a 2022 campaign that was entirely destroyed by injury. Ramsey is expected to team with Howard and Kohou to form one of the best cornerback trios in the NFL.
Miami has some cornerback depth in the form of second-round pick Cam Smith, Keion Crossen, and Nik Needham. But Needham is currently on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, and the Dolphins would struggle to replace Ramsey with any of their backup options.
Ramsey ranked as the league’s second-best corner in PFN’s most recent positional rankings. He’s earned three first-team All-Pro berths while being selected to the Pro Bowl six times.
“This defense, this secondary, you look at it on paper, it’s something that you would definitely want to be a part of,” Ramsey said after being traded to Miami. “I know I’m not the only person who wanted to be a part of it and will want to be a part of it in the future.”
Ramsey has been durable through seven NFL seasons. He missed four games with back and knee injuries in 2019, while an illness cost him one contest in 2020. Ramsey played through two AC joint sprains in 2021 before undergoing left shoulder surgery that offseason, then had right shoulder surgery earlier this year.
