Is Jalen Hurts the NFL’s Highest-Paid Quarterback?

This season, Hurts has had an up-and-down campaign for the Eagles. He completed 248 of 361 passes for 2,903 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

However, he delivered a stellar performance in the NFC Championship Game against the Washington Commanders, completing 20 of 28 passes for 246 yards and 1 touchdown. He also added 16 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground.

Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million contract with the Eagles in 2023. His $51 million average annual salary ranks ninth among the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks.

In addition to his annual salary, Hurts received $179.3 million in guarantees and a no-trade clause. He is guaranteed $110 million fully and will receive $126.5 million before the second year of the deal. He can also earn another $15 million through incentives. Hurts is under contract through 2028.

The Eagles structured his contract with option bonuses to keep his cap charges low for now. However, similar to Lamar Jackson’s deal, Hurts’ extension is expected to be reworked in the future.

When the Eagles and Chiefs last met in the Super Bowl two seasons ago, Hurts delivered one of the best quarterback performances in recent Super Bowl history. He finished the game with 304 yards passing and one touchdown through the air while adding 70 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Hurts hopes to replicate that performance for a different result on Sunday. According to PFN’s QB+ metric, Hurts ranks fifth in the quarterback standings (regular season and postseason combined) with an 85.9 score and a B grade. His efficiency from a clean pocket, clutch play in high-pressure moments, and third-down conversion rate are among the best in the league.

The Commanders attempted to exploit Hurts’ struggles against pressure in the NFC Championship Game, but costly penalties and a few key plays from the Eagles quarterback helped Philadelphia advance to its second Super Bowl in three seasons.

Hurts has the perfect opportunity to silence his critics. A win against the defending champions would cement his legacy and reinforce his place among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks.

Though the Eagles now emphasize the run game with superstar running back Saquon Barkley in the backfield, Hurts will need to get A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith involved while making an impact himself for the Eagles to defeat the Chiefs this weekend.
