Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has been dealing with a thumb injury, which caused him to sit out the Week 9 contest against the Green Bay Packers. What is Stafford’s status heading into Week 11?
Matthew Stafford Injury Update
Stafford initially injured his right thumb in Week 8 after hitting it on Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Mazi Smith’s helmet. He aggravated the injury on a two-point conversion attempt at the end of the first half and left in the third quarter of the Rams’ 43-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Stafford completed 13 of 22 attempts for 162 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against the Cowboys before departing. He was replaced by backup Brett Rypien, who completed 50% of his passes for 42 yards after stepping in.
Stafford was diagnosed with a torn UCL and sat out Week 9 as the Rams suffered a 20-3 loss to the Packers. Rypien completed 46.4% of his pass attempts for 130 yards and an interception in the contest.
The Rams then waived Rypien and signed free agent QB Carson Wentz as the new backup quarterback. Rypien was later signed to the Seahawks’ practice squad.
The Rams’ Week 10 bye came at a convenient time, as Stafford had more time to recover. He is expected to play this week against the Seahawks as Sean McVay said Stafford was able to throw the ball during individual drills during practice Monday. Although, McVay added that he will be “pushing through.”
“Thumb’s feeling better than I thought it would,” Stafford said during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show Friday. “I was a little bit scared in the Dallas game that it was going to be worse than it was and just happy it’s not. I’m going to do everything I can to be out there. I love playing this game and love competing, so I’m going to do whatever I need to do to be out there.”
So far this season, Stafford has completed 59.7% of his passes for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
The 3-6 Rams will host the 6-3 Seahawks in a division rivalry game Sunday.
