ESPN’s Charles Davis Sees ‘Some Anthony Richardson’ in Jalen Milroe

Regardless of opinions, Milroe’s athleticism has drawn comparisons to Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson. Both share a mix of rare physical traits and questions about their consistency as a passer. During the Jan. 28 Senior Bowl practice, ESPN’s Charles Davis likened Milroe’s upside to Richardson, emphasizing his size, arm strength, and mobility, although accuracy remains a hurdle.

When asked by NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah what excites him about Milroe, Davis replied, “I think for me, the first time I saw him in person was the size. I couldn’t believe just how big Jalen Milroe was. He didn’t translate as well onto TV, but I’m sure those who played against him said hold on a second.”

“To me, there’s some Anthony Richardson in what we’re talking about. Big arm. Accuracy has to be discovered in some ways, but when he takes off and runs, defenses have issues, and that’s what he has going for him right now,” Davis added.

Another ESPN insider, Field Yates, discussed Milroe’s elite rushing ability, stating, “He might run a 4.37 [40-yard dash] at the Combine, but the real question is whether he can refine his precision passing game.”

The Alabama star had a decent outing in the 2024 college football season, with 2,844 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and 20 rushing scores. However, his 11 interceptions and struggles with accuracy remain areas of concern.

Milroe’s first practice in Mobile was a mixed bag. While his arm strength was evident, his inability to consistently connect with receivers, even in low-pressure drills, raised eyebrows. One scout noted that Milroe frequently checked down his throws, struggled with timing on intermediate routes, and got intercepted.

However, Senior Bowl practices are known for early challenges as players adjust to new teammates, coaches, and systems. There are still two days of practice remaining, and Milroe will have the opportunity to bolster his draft stock.

The comparisons to Richardson highlight the potential reward for NFL teams willing to bet on Milroe’s raw talent. Richardson, after all, became a top-four pick despite similar pre-draft concerns. One positive in Milroe’s favor is his ability to dominate with his legs and flash a cannon of an arm, which has scouts intrigued. However, long-term questions about whether he can develop into a complete quarterback linger.

With competitors like Ward and Sanders leading the QB class, Milroe has work to do to secure a Round 1 selection.
