‘Incompetent’ — Cowboys Fans Furious With Jerry Jones After He Reveals Dallas Won’t Be Aggressive in Free Agency

When it comes to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, there is the potential for headlines every time he opens his mouth. Whether he’s finding positives in the Dallas sun blinding his players after a loss, or publicly announcing the team’s preferred prospects in the draft ahead of time, it’s rarely boring.

But while the rest of the league can enjoy Jones’ fascinating insights and mind-bending reasonings, Cowboys fans are less than impressed. Many of those fans took to social media to voice their disapproval recently, after Jones played down the team’s need to add in free agency.

Cowboys Fans Furious With Jerry Jones

After Cowboys executive Steven Jones stated that the team would be “selectively aggressive” in free agency this year, fans could have been forgiven for getting excited. After a 7-10 season that saw the team miss out on the playoffs and resulted in head coach Mike McCarthy’s departure, the Cowboys are in need of a boost.

But after delaying proceedings with McCarthy, and missing out on several top head coaching prospects as a result, Jones was to disappoint fans again.

Contrary to what his son had suggested previously, Jones downplayed the need for free-agent signings. Speaking after Zack Martin’s retirement press conference, Jones said:

“I don’t think aggressive is the right word,” before stating “I’m not looking at free agency as a place to fill voids.”

Those comments have gone down as well as could be expected with Cowboys fans, many of whom have voiced their frustrations on social media.

One fan referred to Jones as “incompetent”

Another referred to the organization as a “cheap joke of a franchise.”

And it didn’t stop there, with two other fans calling Jones a clown, and perhaps more whimsically, a “clod.”

    What Do the Cowboys Need?

The Cowboys struggled in the run game on both sides of the ball in 2024, ranking third in yards allowed per rush attempt and 30th in offensive rushing yards per attempt (both tied). They also allowed the most rushing touchdowns over the regular season, with 25.

With a host of top running back prospects available in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Cowboys can wait until then to address that issue. But with nine-time Pro-Bowler and seven-time first-team All-Pro Zack Martin retiring, there is a big hole to fill on the offensive line.

Add in the team’s defensive struggles in 2024 and the lack of a clear number-two receiver and there is much work to be done.

Dak Prescott should be healthy in September after his season-ending injury derailed the Cowboys’ 2024 season. But to keep pace in an NFC East division that boasts the Super Bowl-winning Eagles and a resurgent Washington Commanders, the Cowboys will need a lot more.
