Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already solidified himself as one of the best NFL quarterbacks in history. How old is the veteran passer?
Patrick Mahomes’ Age and Career
The two-time Super Bowl winner has led the way for the Chiefs since 2018 as the starting quarterback and has been named the NFL MVP twice. At the age of 28, he has made a name for himself in the league that will go down in history.
Last season, Mahomes led the NFL in passing yards (5,250), touchdown passes (41), and total QBR (77.5) while guiding the Chiefs to a 14-3 record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC en route to a Super Bowl win.
This season, he has led his Chiefs to another Super Bowl, where they will take on the San Francisco 49ers in a 2020 Super Bowl rematch. In the regular season, he completed 67.2% of his passes for 4,183 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
Mahomes was a three-star recruit coming out of high school and attended Texas Tech in Lubbock from 2014 to 2016. He also received offers from Rice and Oklahoma State.
During Mahomes’ freshman year, the starting quarterback, Davis Webb, dealt with injuries, giving Mahomes the start for seven games. He was then named the starter in his sophomore and junior years.
In the 2016 campaign, Mahomes played in 12 games, throwing for 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns while scoring 12 rushing touchdowns. He led the nation in passing yards, and he earned the Sammy Baugh Trophy as the nation’s top passer.
The Chiefs selected Mahomes with the 10th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Quarterback Alex Smith retained the starting position for another season, but Mahomes soon took over the starting role in Year 2 and didn’t look back.
In 2018, he became just the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for 50 touchdowns and 5,000 passing yards.
In February 2020, Mahomes led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl and won the championship over the San Francisco 49ers by a final score of 31-20. He was named the Super Bowl LIV MVP and, later that year, finalized a 10-year deal with the Chiefs, reportedly worth up to $503 million.
In February 2023, Mahomes and the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 as Mahomes took home his second Super Bowl victory. He was awarded the Super Bowl MVP for the second time.
Since becoming the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, Patrick Mahomes has led the team to six consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances from the 2018 season through 2023.
For a brief period, it appeared that Kansas City’s streak could come to an end this season as they took a 24-9 loss to the struggling Denver Broncos and went 2-4 for a six-week stretch that included losses to the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Buffalo Bills.
Mahomes recently admitted that this was perhaps the most challenging season of his career so far.
“I would say it’s just challenging in the fact that I had to deal with a lot of adversity, not having the success that I’ve had in the past,” Mahomes said.
“Knock on wood, I haven’t had to deal with the injuries I have had before, but at the same time, being able to not win all the games and go out there and have big stats and all that kind of stuff has been different.”

The team was still easily able to claim a playoff spot and has made their way all the way back to the Super Bowl.
“It’s taught me how to win in different ways, though, and become the best quarterback for our team,” Mahomes said. “Not necessarily the best quarterback for stats and stuff like that, but the best quarterback for us to go out there and get wins.”
