The San Francisco 49ers are taking on the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl this Sunday. How many times has San Francisco won the Super Bowl?
49ers’ Super Bowl Wins
This year marks the 49ers’ eighth Super Bowl appearance, which is tied for the 2nd-most by any team in NFL history. San Francisco will join the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, and Denver Broncos with eight Super Bowl appearances, while only the Patriots have played in more (11).
San Francisco has won five Super Bowls, tied for the third-most Super Bowl wins of any franchise. The Cowboys have also won five Super Bowls, while only the Patriots and Steelers (six each) have won more. The 49ers franchise has also won 38 playoff games, the most in NFL history.
After winning in the big game on their first five trips, the 49ers have lost the last two times they’ve been to the Super Bowl.
The team’s first Super Bowl win was after the 1981 season in Super Bowl 16. 49ers quarterback and Hall of Famer Joe Montana was named Super Bowl MVP after passing for 157 yards and one touchdown. He also had a rushing TD in the win. The Niners beat the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21.
In Super Bowl 19 in 1985, San Francisco beat the Miami Dolphins 38-16. Joe Montana was named Super Bowl MVP again after passing for 331 yards and three touchdowns.
The 49ers took down the Bengals in the Super Bowl again in Super Bowl 23 in 1989. Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice produced 11 receptions, 215 receiving yards, and a touchdown in the 20-16 win and was named the MVP. Hall of Famer Bill Walsh retired from coaching the 49ers after winning Super Bowl 23. He won three Super Bowls as the 49ers’ head coach.
The Niners made the big game again the following year, defeating the Denver Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl 24 in 1990.
Despite Bill Walsh’s retirement and rookie head coach George Seifert taking over, the 49ers finished the 1989 regular season 14-2.
The game had the most lopsided score in Super Bowl history, and at one point in the third, the 49ers had a 41-3 lead over the Broncos before John Elway finally got Denver on the board with a touchdown. Joe Montana was awarded his third Super Bowl MVP after the win as he passed for 297 yards and five touchdowns.
The 49ers then won Super Bowl 29 in the 1994 NFL season as they defeated the San Diego Chargers 49-26. They were led by Hall of Fame QB Steve Young, who was named MVP as he passed for 325 yards and a Super Bowl record six touchdowns. At the time, the 49ers were the first team to win five Super Bowls. Super Bowl 29 is San Francisco’s most recent championship.
Now, after taking losses in the Super Bowl in 2013 and 2020, the 49ers are looking to take home their first Lombardi Trophy after a 29-year drought.

In 2020 against the Chiefs, the teams were tied at 10 after the first half, and San Francisco scored 10 unanswered in the third quarter to take a 20-10 lead heading into the fourth. However, the Chiefs rattled off three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win it 31-20.
The 49ers will be seeking revenge in what should be a solid matchup against the Chiefs this Sunday in Super Bowl 58.
