Baltimore Ravens dual-threat QB Lamar Jackson is the odds-on favorite to win the 2023-2024 NFL MVP Award. Has he ever won the award before?
Has Lamar Jackson Ever Won MVP?
Jackson was voted the MVP of the 2019 season. He became the second player after Tom Brady in 2010 to be voted unanimously and the second-youngest player to win, behind only Jim Brown.
In the 2019 season, Jackson led the league in touchdowns with 36 passing scores and seven trips to the end zone on the ground. Jackson threw for 3,127 yards and posted a 113.3 passer rating, with the latter mark exceeding the average rating of an MVP quarterback (107.8) en route to leading the Ravens to the AFC’s top seed with a 14-2 record.
Jackson rushed for 1,206 yards, breaking Michael Vick’s single-season record for a quarterback in the process and obliterating the average mark for an MVP quarterback (131). He more than tripled the average mark for rushing touchdowns with his seven scores.
He was the first Ravens player to win the award.
In the playoffs that season, the Ravens lost in the Divisional Round versus the Tennessee Titans, 28–12. Jackson finished the game completing 31 of 59 passes for 365 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions while also losing a fumble on a strip-sack.
Will Jackson Win the MVP Award This Year?
Jackson has been phenomenal this season and helped guide his team to the best record in the NFL.
Jackson had one of his best statistical seasons in the 2023-24 campaign, amassing a stat line of 3,678 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 16 games. He also added 821 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
The Louisville product started the season with a well-deserved new deal from the Ravens. His new contract made him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league.
He appears to be the likely front-runner for the MVP at this point, but Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy and RB Christian McCaffrey, and Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott are also contenders.
Allen overcame some early turnover issues to lead the Bills into the playoffs after a collective rough start to the season. He ultimately threw for 4,306 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions while rushing for 524 yards and 15 more scores.
Purdy and McCaffrey have both had strong seasons, while Prescott put up strong numbers through much of the regular season before Dallas’ playoff collapse.
Over the last decade, we’ve seen some of the best quarterbacks in the league capture the MVP, including Kansas City Chief Patrick Mahomes, then-Green Bay Packer Aaron Rodgers, and future Hall of Famer Tom Brady.
