How Many Super Bowls Have the San Francisco 49ers Won?

    Published on

As the team of the 1980s, the San Francisco 49ers have a well-known connection with the Super Bowl. Let's check out their previous Super Bowl victories.

The San Francisco 49ers are two wins away from joining the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots as teams to win six Super Bowls. But they are also looking to end a 30-year drought without being presented with the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Let’s take a look at the five wins the 49ers have in their Super Bowl trophy case.

San Francisco 49ers Have 5 Super Bowl Victories

    Super Bowl XVI

Led by a pair of future Hall of Famers — head coach Bill Walsh and quarterback Joe Montana — the 49ers captured their first NFL championship of any kind, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals, 26-21, in Super Bowl XVI.

The game saw the 49ers jump out to a 20-0 lead by halftime, only to have the Bengals twice get within one score in the fourth quarter.

The game itself is best remembered for a dramatic goal-line stand by San Francisco’s defense in the third quarter, with Cincinnati on the cusp of making a 20-7 deficit trimmed to a single score.

Montana, the Super Bowl MVP, threw for only 157 yards, but he had a touchdown pass and ran for one.

    Super Bowl XIX

In one of the most hyped Super Bowls ever, the 15-1 49ers dominated the 14-2 Miami Dolphins to win their second Super Bowl, 38-16.

This game featured arguably the game’s top two quarterbacks in Montana and Miami’s Dan Marino. Both threw for over 300 yards, the first time that had ever happened in a Super Bowl.

Trailing 10-7 after the first quarter, the 49ers took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Dolphins 21-6 to take a 28-16 lead into halftime.

Montana captured his second Super Bowl MVP award, setting a then-Super Bowl record with 331 passing yards. He also threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, setting another Super Bowl record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 59.

    Super Bowl XXIII

Montana cemented his place as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, leading San Francisco on a 92-yard game-winning touchdown drive, giving the 49ers a 20-16 victory over the Bengals.

Montana found John Taylor with a 10-yard touchdown pass for the game-winning score with 34 seconds left. Yet, it was wide receiver Jerry Rice who was the biggest star in this game. Rice caught 11 passes for a Super Bowl-record 215 yards and a touchdown, earning SB MVP honors for his historic performance.

This would turn out to be the final game of Walsh’s career as the 49ers’ head coach. He retired from NFL coaching after the championship.

    Super Bowl XXIV

After winning the Super Bowl in one of the most dramatic finishes one year earlier, the 49ers captured Super Bowl No. 4 with the largest blowout in the championship’s history, beating the Denver Broncos, 55-10.

The 55 points were a Super Bowl record, as was the 45-point margin of victory.

Montana won his third Super Bowl MVP with a brilliant performance, completing 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and a Super Bowl-record five touchdown passes. Rice once again put on a superstar performance, with seven catches for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

The 49ers’ defense forced four turnovers and held the Broncos under 200 total yards (167). It was not only San Francisco’s fourth Super Bowl title, but they became the fourth different franchise to win back-to-back Super Bowl championships.

    Super Bowl XXIX

San Francisco became the first team to win five Super Bowls with another blowout victory — this one over the surprising San Diego Chargers, 49-26. The 49ers had a comfortable 28-10 lead at the half and led by as many as 32 points in the second half.

Quarterback Steve Young won his first Super Bowl title as a starting quarterback, completing the transformation of the franchise from the Joe Montana era to the Steve Young era. Young threw for 325 yards and a Super Bowl-record six touchdowns.
